editor’s letter

My teenage daughter has bestowed on me the title of ‘Most judgy member of the family’. I like to think I’m simply stating facts by pointing out that her hair could do with a brush. She, on the other hand, thinks it’s a negative judgment of her personal style and an opinion that I should keep to myself, thank you very much. Whatever the semantics, and regardless of our game of chase with a hairbrush each morning, I feel a little burst of pride that my 14-year-old is turning into an emotionally intelligent young woman, who makes me stop to think about what I say, the way I say it, and what the subtext might be. As we embark on another new year, this issue is very much about self-reflection…

how to build your capsule wardrobe

The modern romantic A wear-anywhere dress is a modern romantic’s must-have. We’ve found ‘the one’ in this Markus Lupfer piece (below), which works for a night out, summer party or at the weekend with trainers. Another perfect formula is a chunky sweater and pleated skirt. And you can’t go wrong with a classic trench. It can be worn all year with everything from denim to sequins – we love the statement cuffs on this one by Palmer/Harding. Your go-to shoe? The mule is elegant and has a heel you can pound the pavements in – boom. The minimalist A burst of primary brights can help liven up a minimal look, but stick to block colours and fuss-free silhouettes. Invest in quality basics: the perfect white tee, like this one by Arket (above), is…

sophie mechaly for paul & joe

If you’re a fan of flirty, pretty French style, you’ve got a lot to thank Paul & Joe for. Long before ‘French-girl-cool’ was the Brit fashion fixation it is now, the label was doing exactly that. Founded in Paris in 1996 by Sophie Mechaly – who named it after her two young sons – the idea was to combine boyish design elements with a cute, retro femininity. Mechaly’s recipe: take men’s shirts and blazers, mix with frilly high-necked blouses and 70s-inspired denim, then sprinkle with Mary-Jane shoes and delicate jewellery. Et voilà : perfect gamine chic, à la Alexa Chung (she’s a fan). Mechaly’s signature shirting is in her genes. During her childhood, her parents both worked in fashion and ran two successful shirt labels (Julien and Le Garage). After…
