International Women’s Day has always been a significant date in the diary for Marie Claire, celebrating the achievements of women the world over while highlighting the still yawning equality gap. If I’m honest our approach has probably always erred on the polite – reporting on the key issues, giving a voice to women and girls who are never normally listened to, calling for change. On 8 March 2018, however, we will be positively shouting for change. The momentum born out of #MeToo and #TimesUp is carrying us all on a wave that’s rocking the establishment and making the female agenda something that can no longer be merely paid lip service before being brushed firmly back under the carpet. The notion of friends and family is the beating heart at the centre of The Kooples, which is ten years old (or should that be young and achingly cool?) this year. Run by three brothers, designers Laurent (womenswear), Alexandre (menswear) and marketing director Raphael Elicha – the label launched in 2008, and immediately grabbed the public’s attention with ad campaigns featuring hot real-life couples. The name was the result of the brothers playing with the French pronunciation of the word ‘couples’. ‘It seemed too easy, we couldn’t believe that it hadn’t been done before,’ laughs Raphael.
