editor’s letter

As much as I can’t wait for the next instalment of The Crown, I’d love to fast forward a few series to see how writer Peter Morgan will reimagine the afternoon the Queen hosted Donald Trump at Windsor Castle. Given Trump’s ability to appoint himself the most important person in any room, not to mention the fact he had insulted her head of government and pretty much everyone else in Europe beforehand, I am sincerely hoping she put him right back in his box. In fact, she is probably the one person in the world who could actually do that. Then again, what are the chances of even Her Maj’s sharpest quips penetrating his thick (orange) skin? Standing up to Trump’s racist, misogynistic and divisive policies and rhetoric is something women…

michael kors

When a label has the global household-name recognition of ‘Michael Kors’, it’s easy to forget there’s an actual person behind it. And that person was actually born Karl Anderson Jr (the ‘Kors’ happened when his mother remarried, and the ‘Michael’ was a name he chose for himself). If you do think of the person, it’s probably the mile-a-minute Project Runway persona. But behind the spotted-everywhere MK totes - aka, the bags that turbo-charged the idea of ‘accessible luxury’ - there’s a lot more to Mr Kors. Born in Long Island, the fashion writing was on the wall early on. He helped design his mum’s wedding dress for her second marriage - when he was five. He couldn’t be doing with the theory of fashion design, dropping out of New York’s…

arianna casadei

You may not know Arianna Casadei, but she’s Italian shoe royalty – the granddaughter of Quinto Casadei and daughter of Cesare Casadei, who have been making footwear since 1958. The house invented the ‘Blade’ heel, a fierce (but comfortable, according to its many devotees) metal stiletto that runs all the way up the back. She’s now part of the business – working in communications – which counts J-Lo and Kylie among its customers. It goes without saying that Arianna has grown up surrounded by fabulous shoes. To celebrate the brand’s 60th anniversary, we asked her to tell us about a few of the many pairs that have marked her life. First pair ‘My first memory of a Casadei shoe was when I was 13. Like all little girls, I played dress-up…

a history in heels

1958-1977 Quinto and Flora Casadei create their debut collection of sandals in 1958, designed for tourists holidaying on the Italian Riviera. The 70s saw the first advertising campaigns, worldwide exports and first standalone store in Brussels. 1994 Cesare Casadei is appointed creative director and takes the ‘made in Italy’ craftsmanship to a global level. 2000-2012 The iconic ‘Blade’ heel is born. Celebrities like J-Lo, Kylie Minogue, Victoria Beckham and Sophia Loren are photographed wearing Casadei. 2018 Casadei celebrates its 60th anniversary with a pared-back, modern kitten heel collection, encasing the iconic ‘Blade’ heel in Plexiglas like a work of art.…
