editor’s letter

The champagne corks are popping here at Marie Claire HQ as we celebrate 30 years in business. While the world, and media in particular, has changed enormously since this magazine was launched back in 1988, our mission and purpose has resolutely remained the same – to combine thought-provoking journalism with inspirational fashion and beauty for smart, discerning women like you. As you flick through this special issue, you’ll notice that we’ve changed our formula slightly, introducing an ‘in conversation’ series in which we’ve invited musicians, film-makers, comedians, designers, businesswomen and even a frog (really!) to get to the heart of the issues that matter today. Discussing everything from sustainability, immigration, feminism and friendship to social media, self-identity and personal style, they are as entertaining as they are insightful. Each conversation is…

OCTOBER 1988 The look: The Three Faces Of Autumn wearing Gianfranco Ferre. Recreated by: Madeleine Spencer (aka; @madeleinelovesthis) Madeleine says: ‘This girl looks like a woman on a mission, which I love. It’s the kind of outfit I’d wear anywhere, and having the same colour on two areas of your face feels like a really modern way of doing make-up. The 80s was such a diverse time, but there was also austerity and the depressing politics. There’s a parallel with today, which is perhaps why the style resonates.’ Up next: Ô My podcast, Beauty Full Lives, is out this month. It’s beauty conversations with people who aren’t necessarily from the industry, and it’s about self-esteem and confidence.’ OCTOBER 1992 The look: Cindy Crawford’s Beauty Secrets The photographer: Hiromasa Recreated by: Anchal (@anchalmua) Anchal says: ‘This is such a…

french sandro’s evelyne chétrite & kermit the frog fabulous

Kermit the Frog has often been put in the shade by his colleague Miss Piggy – physically, metaphorically, you name it. But he’s finally enjoying a well-deserved moment in the fashion spotlight, thanks to his collaboration with French label Sandro. Creative director Evelyne Chétrite could be said to sum up all that is good and chic in the fashion world – her Paris-based label is responsible for making insouciant rock ’n’ roll French style a reality for those of us who don’t live within a croissant’s throw of the Eiffel Tower. Merci , Evelyne… A lifelong Kermit fan, she finally persuaded him to work with her on a capsule collection hitting stores this month. We meet the new fashion collab duo to find out more… Evelyne: Kermit, I’ve loved you since your…

SUNDAE BEST Soft, sorbet hues deliver a stylish wardrobe refresh. Take your cue from Eudon Choi and Sies Marjan who kept it cool on the catwalk with a mismatch of muted greens, blush pinks and faded blues. Work key pieces in a variety of ice-cream colours and you’ve got the trend covered. GO FOR BOLD Marni and Tibi put statement colour-blocking back on the radar this season and whether you’re drawn to pillar-box red, electric blue or primary green, make sure you match your accessories to create one seriously showstopping look. NEUTRAL TERRITORY Live in neutrals? This hybrid trend offers an ideal compromise for the colour-shy. Rejina Pyo and Cyclas lead the way, teaming a tan base with pops of sunshine yellow and orange. Try working stone trousers with a splash of red, or go…

shoes charlotte olympia & sophia webster success

One is a vintage Hollywood obsessive known for red lips and leopard print, who made her name with towering 40s style platforms. The other has attracted a legion of magpie fans with her girlie, glittery rainbow-explosion aesthetic, while harbouring a love for R&B. But Charlotte Olympia, who celebrates her label’s tenth anniversary this year, and Sophia Webster, who has just opened her second standalone store (in London’s Sloane Avenue) have a lot in common. Namely, being successful shoe designers, an arena historically dominated by men. Each of their brands carry their own names, and each live and breathe their particular styles, which run through all their designs like a stick of Brighton rock. They’re both mothers – Charlotte to four - yes, four - boys, and Sophia to a little…
