editor’s letter

Eight years ago, I was at a super-chic lunch hosted by Diane von Furstenberg in London on the day that Barack Obama was voted the US president. Diane was a huge supporter of Obama’s and gave her guests a canvas tote bag that she’d designed with the words ‘hope’ and ‘change’ written beside his name. I still have that bag next to my desk here in the Marie Claire office (stashed with random bits of gym kit), and I will take those words with me into 2017, because as this year comes to a close it feels like the world has been turned upside down. Hope is what we need, and change is what we have to keep fighting for. Whether you got the answer you wanted on 23 June and…

The trench This classic cover-up has been given a revamp with modern shapes, innovative fabrics and a twist on the basic beige we’re so familiar with. The knit The cream knit will always be a staple, but it’s not going to see much sunlight come spring. Jazzy jumpers were in abundance on the catwalks, and whether you pick ruffles or cut-outs, you’ll be on trend. The jeans Give your favourite jeans a modern spin by embellishing, studding and stitching your way into 2017. Don’t be shy, it’s time to take denim decoration to the max. The shoe Wave goodbye to your pointed courts, because footwear has been given an overhaul. An easy way to update any outfit is to start with the shoes, so take inspiration from the bottom and work upwards. The white shirt More is more right…

9 to 5 my style

MY WARDROBE HAS TO MAKE ME FEEL ECCENTRIC. I look for pieces with a twist. They must be edgy but comfortable. I’M ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED WITH SHOES . Anything from Vetements heels to Dr Martens boots – I just love them! I LIKE TO MIX feminine clothing with masculine elements – it’s the perfect balance. HAVING A HUGE PASSION FOR JEWELLERY is how I got my job. I wanted to design and wear pieces that didn’t exist. The best bit is seeing people with my creations on all over the world. I’M ALL ABOUT THE BLING . My friends call me ‘Christmas tree’. For me, adding the perfect pieces of jewellery completes an outfit. EVERY WOMAN SHOULD OWN a pair of Levi’s jeans, a trench and a blazer – they are the wardrobe essentials that will…

style spotlight stuart weitzman

‘If a shoe doesn’t work on the foot, design something else.’ Stuart Weitzman definitely took his shoemaker dad’s advice to heart, making his name with the ‘Nudist’ – a strappy sandal so famously comfortable that it has become a red-carpet celebrity staple. ‘If you get a woman into your store and put something on her foot that distresses her, she’ll never come back,’ he says. Weitzman made 19 trials of the ‘Nudist’, which celebrates its 30th birthday this year, before hitting on the perfect design (the entire arch of the foot is supported, taking weight off the balls and the heel). Born and based in New York, Weitzman’s magic combo of can-do and comfort has resulted in memorable collaborations with hard-to-please performers. He’s covered silver satin boots in 30,000 crystals for…
