The good news is that most of the new kit we see is more innovative and better quality than ever Since as far back as early spring, our dedicated testing team have been heading out across the globe on the latest bike and kit launches for 2019. They’ve trawled the floors of the UK’s biggest bike shows as well as making the annual pilgrimage to the mother of all trade shows – Eurobike in Germany – to uncover the most exciting developments for the year ahead. During that time, they’ve seen one hell of a lot of new bikes and gear, and talked to hundreds of key figures involved with their design and development. The good news is that most of the kit they’ve seen is more innovative and better quality than…

world domination

Australia’s Sam Hill (pictured) and France’s Cécile Ravanel continue to dominate the Enduro World Series, taking back-to-back wins at the latest two rounds and extending their leads in the overall standings. Round four visited not one but two new countries – Austria and Slovenia. Many of the trails were newly cut in for the event, which meant loamy goodness, but also hidden roots, rocks and fresh mud. This was the first EWS race that crossed national borders, and the liaisons had a ‘first’ as well – a 20-minute tunnel transfer through old mineshafts. The fresh dirt, long stages and unpredictable weather made for some hectic racing, where experience paid off, with both reigning champs taking the win. This was to be repeated on the steep, techical terrain of the high mountains of…

earn those epic turns

In biking circles, the name Glencoe stirs up images of the brutally steep and rocky downhill track that can be seen en route to Fort William, carving its way down the weather-beaten mountainside. It’s an intimidating sight, but the guys from Glencoe Mountain Resort are keen to shake off its scary reputation, and have been busy building a range of trails to show its other side. Besides revamping the easier red DH run with flowy jumps and berms, they’ve also ventured higher up above the chairlift and scraped out a natural, arcing line that makes for a proper Highland experience. Named the Epic Glades, after the Etive Glades ski run it follows, the 4km trail can only be accessed by a steep fireroad grind, but trust us, it’s worth the pedalling…

the bike that grows with your kid

Black Mountain Bikes claim to have made the world’s most advanced kids’ bike – one that’s lightweight, fits properly and grows with them. Their ‘EPOK’ technology lets you convert the 14in-wheeled Pinto from a balance bike to a small pedal bike and then a larger bike with harder gearing (pictured) as your child grows bigger and stronger. The first stage simply involves undoing a couple of bolts and swapping the stubby balance bike seat tube for a longer version with a belt-drive crankset at its base. You then add the belt itself, wrap it around the sprocket already attached to the rear wheel and tension it via an eccentric bolt. When your child is ready to move onto a bigger bike, the ‘Growing Triangle’ comes into play – you can increase the…

austria’s golden girl

Vali Höll is the 16-year-old strian downhiller who’s blown Au her competition in the Junior category away this season and no doubt has the Elite field already worried about her arrival in 2020. Winning all five World Cup rounds so far and putting huge margins into her rivals, Vali has wrapped up the series lead with two rounds to go. We caught up with her after Vallnord to find out how she’s finding her first World Cup season. “I didn’t think about doing that well,” she told us. “Everything is new. I thought I’d be much more nervous”. While Vali posted a time quick enough for the Elite podium in Fort William, she sees this more as a compliment than added pressure. “Times aren’t exactly comparable,” she explained. “ Because we…
