editor’s letter

Even the easiest of sections becomes twice as challenging and exhilarating, at what feels like double your normal speed After such a cracking summer, the dropping temperatures and longer nights have taken a fair bit of adjusting to as they all-too-rapidly start to close in. We’re not going to dwell on that though, because we’re ready to embrace the season change and look for the opportunities it presents. Things may be getting a little darker out there in the evenings but that doesn’t mean you have to curtail those after-work rides with your mates that you’ve become so accustomed to. Now’s a great time to dig out or invest in a decent set of lights and hit your local trails under the cover of darkness. The good news…

into the shadows

It’s easy to get despondent at this time of the year. Summer is behind us and months of dark days and long nights await. Finding the motivation to get out there when the sky is leaden and rain is falling can be hard, but there are rewards to be had, as British photographer Sam Needham found out during a particularly grim day’s shooting in Whistler Bike Park.“I took this shot as part of my Deep Summer Photo Challenge entry,” he explains. “Moments before, my friend Ali Parkin had crashed, dislocating his shoulder and breaking his ankle. He was taken off the mountain by the bike patrol and we progressed further into the woods, on the trail In Deep.“It wasn’t raining, but the fog was so dense it was…

a-maes-ing!

Enduro World Series rider Martin Maes pulled off the biggest upset of the 2018 downhill season by winning the final World Cup round in La Bresse, France – and then nearly went on to take gold at the World Championships too (see page 52 for more on that). While it was no surprise to see Rachel Atherton take top honours – and the World Cup series title – in France, albeit with only a 0.6-second lead over fellow Brit Tahnée Seagrave, few would have predicted Maes’ wildcard win. The Belgian is no stranger to racing DH, winning a silver medal at the Junior World Champs in 2015 and smashing out a 10th place finish in Fort William earlier this year. But beating the world’s best in appalling conditions shows…

smooth operator

Kona’s new carbon gravity bike can be tailored to your needs. Want to race downhill? Stick with the stock 29in wheels and 195mm of travel, and use the eccentric headset cups to stretch out the reach for stability. Rather ride park? Swap in some more playful 650b hoops, flip the chip at the top of the seatstays to adjust the geometry and increase travel to 205mm, and rotate the headset for a more agile cockpit feel. The bike uses Kona’s ‘Beamer’ suspension platform – a single-pivot set-up with linkage-driven shock. RockShox take care of damping duties, with their flagship BoXXer World Cup fork and trunnion-mounted Super Deluxe Coil RC World Cup shock, while SRAM, Race Face and Mavic provide more race-ready kit. The Operator CR is available in two…

gearing up for the desert

The gnarliest freeride event on the planet, Red Bull Rampage, returns at the end of this month and the elite few on the rider list are psyching themselves up to tackle death-defying lines in the Utah desert. One rider who’s hungrier than ever is French-born Rémy Métailler, who lives in Canada and was turned away at the US border on his way to Rampage 2017 due to visa issues. We asked Rémy how he was preparing himself, mentally and physically, ahead of his quest for redemption, and he told us it was all about confidence. “I have to be sure of my own ability,” he said. “Having fun and feeling comfortable is key. I’ve been spending a lot of time riding my downhill bike and I’ve been trying flat…
