welcome to the merc!

The Drummonds’ hometown of Pawhuska, OK, population 3,700, is a fairly quiet place. Downtown is only a few blocks, and there aren’t many signs of Pawhuska’s wealthy past, when locals basked in the oil boom of the 1920s. But when you reach the corner of East Main Street and Kihekah Avenue, you happen upon a general store that harks back to the town’s heyday. It’s called The Mercantile, named after the building’s former life as the Osage Mercantile, and Ree has been planning every inch of it since 2012. When Ree and Ladd bought the building, it had been sitting neglected for decades. There were holes in the f loor and paint was peeling off the tin ceiling, but Ree saw huge potential. She and Ladd converted part of it into…

it’s a long story

Growing up, I thought there were rules about hair: Either you had long hair or you had “beauty parlor hair” sculpted by rollers and a hooded hair dryer. Of course, I’ve come to realize that there are millions of glorious options in between…yet I can’t seem to break away from long locks. I love the look of a shoulder-length (or shorter) do, and I don’t know what’s stopping me. Maybe I’m simply used to being a girl with long hair. Or maybe I’m clinging to my youth! Or maybe I just know how to deal with long hair. (I once got the Jennifer Aniston Friends cut—short and stacked in the back—and I couldn’t style it for the life of me.) Now that I’m well into my 40s, though, I’m wondering:…

When Ree built this kitchen in 2008, she had no idea it would ever appear on TV. She just wanted to create a room big enough for her family and friends. “My first cookbook wasn’t out yet, and Food Network wasn’t even on my radar,” she says. But over time, the kitchen has turned into her go-to space for everything: recipe testing, meetings, kids’ sleepovers, a wedding—and seven years’ worth of episodes! Luckily, most of the decisions she and Ladd made back then were ideal for shooting a show. Take a look.… Perfect paint Ree chose Valspar’s Buckskin Pony for the walls of the lodge. It’s just the right hue for the room, and it’s also her favorite color of horse! Concrete island The island surface, made of poured concrete, is virtually indestructible. It…

a girl ’s guide to cowboy boots

Ree will be the first to tell you that choosing a pair of cowboy boots is tough. There are so many options: Tall or short? Plain or embellished? Which kind of toe is right? Oh, and why do they cost so much? Well, if a pioneer woman like Ree has a hard time picking out boots, what’s a suburban or city girl to do? Here’s a guide to help you find the perfect pair. And once you do, Ree says to start wearing them—a lot. “A good pair of boots needs some breaking in,” she says. Go rough ’em up! Ree says: You don’t need to match your boots to what you’re wearing. I have a turquoise pair and you’d be amazed at what I’ve worn them with! Pick Your Style Classic Cowgirl Also known…

Sweet Strawberries Put 2 pints halved strawberries in a bowl. Add ½ cup sugar, ½ teaspoon grated lemon zest and ½ teaspoon vanilla and stir. Let macerate for about 30 minutes at room temperature. The sugar will draw out the juices to make a delicious syrup. Top with a sprig of mint before serving. Strawberry Butter Combine ½ cup sliced strawberries and 1 stick softened salted butter in a food processor. Pulse on and off until the butter is combined. Spread on toasted pound cake or bread. Strawberry Sauce Combine 2 pounds strawberries, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla and the juice of ½ lemon in a saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and smush the strawberries with a potato masher. Strain through a…
