sumners ponds

WHY TOUR HERE? The entrance to Sumners Ponds, in Barns Green near Horsham, may strike you as somewhat rustic as you pass the cowshed, but this is an attractive site set around several fishing lakes in the heart of the Sussex countryside. Aside from the fishing, the big draws are its Café by the Lake and a fantastic washblock. Its close proximity to the A24 gets you to the coast, Worthing and Brighton, and the A272 gives easy access to the stunning towns of Petworth and Midhurst, the South Downs National Park and the High Weald AONB. a sticker situation

It seems to me that your recent articles and subsequent letters on the subject of emission stickers avoided mentioning one major problem with the whole system. Going to France and Germany last September, I sent off for the necessary permits. Despite my V5 not having the emissions entered, there were no problems and I quickly received both stickers. Rather surprisingly, the French system seemed slicker than the German one – despite wanting €4.12 rather than a round number. Armed with both stickers, I then sat in the motorhome to position them on the windscreen. During the process I released the pressure on the Umwelt, which promptly slid down the screen and straight into the very narrow gap between the glass and the front of the dashboard. There it stayed, despite fishing attempts with sticky…

5 things we’ve talked about most this month...

1 YOU HAVE YOUR SAY We’ve been busy analysing the results of our latest Owner Satisfaction Survey – the only one of its kind in the industry. Don’t miss our report next month, particularly if you’re planning to buy a ’van. 2 ON YOUR EBIKE Our guide to ebikes (p82) got us all talking – the opinion in the office being: “I want one!” 3 WIN NEC TICKETS! The season is going quickly; it’s almost time for the NEC February show. We have 10 pairs of tickets to give away (see p12). 4 GETTING TANKED UP Gas is something we don’t give much thought to, but it’s vital in the smooth running of your ’van. This issue, we’ve two top features on it (p76 and p88). 5 SYMBOLIC GESTURE Auto-Sleepers is a classic name, and we were thrilled to…

here’s why i love touring in europe

I write this having just returned from a tour across the Channel to Belgium, visiting a couple of great Christmas markets. We took our Benimar Mileo 283 and had a brilliant time – see p72. Our first stop was Ghent, where we stayed overnight on the recently revamped aire. It’s now a dedicated, secure area that’s fenced off; for €12 a night, you can stay for 24 hours and make use of the facilities, which include a drive-over service point, fresh-water tap and electric hook-up. Credit cards are accepted – no need to mess around buying tokens at the tourist office. The whole experience made me realise how much motorcaravanners are valued across the Channel: there’s such a great awareness of the money we bring to the local economy. We did just that in…

holiday hotshots

While touring Europe this year, one of our favourite stops was at Wolfgangsee, Austria. What better place for an early-morning cup of tea! Bill & Jill Hayes This is a photo of our very first adventure in our first motorhome, taken in October 2018 at Whitehill Country Park, Devon. We’re new to touring, but had always wanted to try it, and now we’re planning a trip to Scotland! Nicola Monks At the end of one drive through Spain, we came across this: a medieval bridge in Frias, Burgos. It made the drive worthwhile. A delightful spot; just us and the motorhome. Jennifer Jones On our way to Skibbereen in Ireland, we stopped at the village of Timoleague; a lovely place with a ruined abbey . Here we are parked at the estuary. Bill…
