largs, ayrshire

WHY TOUR HERE? Largs lies at the beginning of what becomes the Firth of Clyde, and just across the water, the Western Highlands and Islands start appearing before you. There’s only one ferry from here, to the island of Great Cumbrae. But you can watch the yachts sailing among the seagulls, or admire the statue of Magnus the Viking, put up in 2013 on the harbour front to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Largs, when the Scots saw off the Vikings for good. Best of all, just down the seafront from here is the art deco Nardini’s ice cream parlour, now a Scottish institution. WHAT MOTORHOME? Rockin Vans VW T6 conversion…

an urgent matter…

I wanted to write to you to air a particular bugbear of mine, which is caravan parks that still insist on using codes and/or fobs for toilet blocks on their sites. I know many motorhomes nowadays come with their own washrooms and toilets – even my van conversion has one. But I often use this area to store my fishing gear, and in any case sometimes you just want to take advantage of the comfort you get in a toilet block. I have to admit that my memory nowadays isn’t as good as it was! All too often I get to the block only to realise that I have forgotten the fob (and often I can’t even remember where I left it) or cannot recall the code. If you are bursting to go,…

motorhomes are best, wherever you go!

I’ve just returned from an extraordinary trip to Norway’s Arctic Circle region, where I was fortunate enough to have the chance to help Hobby winter-test some of its new motorhomes. It was the trip of a lifetime in one of the most beautiful – but harsh – areas of the world. I’ve just about thawed out, and you can read about my exploits in the next issue, but it got me thinking about how ’vans take us to the greatest places. As I type this, Brexit negotiations were ongoing, with little sign of any resolution. Whatever the result, we can only hope it doesn’t become harder to enjoy the very best of our beloved pastime. This month, though, we’re celebrating the many wonderful attractions on our shores. Why go to Europe when there’s…

holiday hotshots special

A lovely place we found at Himmelsberga on Oland, Sweden, during our month-long trip there in June 2018. There’s about 400 of these windmills on the island. This one was opposite an open-air museum, where you can stop for the night. Peter Benson This photograph was taken as we started to descend Switzerland’s Grimsel Pass in our Auto-Trail Apache 700, heading for the Furka Glacier, which you can see in the distance. We could never have imagined traversing such steep, winding and challenging roads in our motorhome, but we did! Nigel Lee A few weeks ago, we parked overnight at Dunstable Do wns car park, only to be stunned b y this sunset! Clare Curtis A few days in early January at a chilly Chew Valley; lots of walks and a lovely Christmas…
