the fight before christmas

As I write, we are barely two weeks away from a General Election, and as this issue hits the newsstand, voters will be hitting the polls for the third time in four years as Britain’s parties battle it out once more for the opportunity to form the government. I can fully appreciate that Sporting Rifle’s readers may be getting fed up of hearing about it, as Brexit proves a monumental roadblock to even the most basic government functions (such as completing a full term in office, for example). Britain’s political parties have engaged the tactic of holding election after election until the country gives them the result they want – I’ve certainly exhausted my repertoire of jokes about the revolving door in Number 10 – and it means having to…

bss goes north to manchester

The British Shooting Show’s second event is back on – and will now take place at Event City, Manchester, on 26-27 September 2020. Under the new name of the British Shooting and Countryman Show, the event has already been confirmed for a three-year run at Event City, BSS organisers said. The announcement comes in the wake of the cancellation of the event originally planned to take place in Liverpool by the city’s council. Shortly after the loss of this event, Event City Manchester approached the BSS team, offering three exhibition halls large enough to launch the British Shooting and Countryman Show 2020. John Allison, MD of the British Shooting Show, commented: “With the continued success and support from all the manufacturers that exhibit at our long-standing Great British Shooting Show held each year…

trophy export under threat

The government is now considering banning the export of hunting trophies from the UK to other countries. Importing certain trophies was already under threat after Zac Goldsmith brought a ban on importing certain species in the UK before parliament. Now, it appears the potential ban is much wider. DEFRA has launched a consultation on the “scale and impacts of the import and export of hunting trophies,” and asked for all parties to provide evidence. If visiting hunters were no longer allowed to take a trophy back with them, it could massively reduce the demand for stalking in the UK and have damaging effects on professional stalkers nationwide. “Whilst we recognise that some conservationists believe that trophy hunting can be an effective conservation tool, supporting local livelihoods and attracting revenues for other conservation activities, we…

new load shows growth in practical shooting

Practical Shooting is growing in the UK. This fast-firing sport tests your accuracy, speed and athleticism, shot on a mixture of multiple targets, moving targets, targets that react when hit, penalty targets, or even partially covered targets requiring movement to reveal. The appeal of the sport lies in its diversity, and that applies to the firearms that can be used too – courses can be shot with rifles, long-barrelled pistols or semi-auto shotguns. Marking the rise in this discipline, there’s now a shotgun load designed specifically for Practical Shooting: the Alpha Elite from Eley Hawk. The load is a 28-gram 7.5-shot fibre wad 70mm case length cartridge with a 16mm brass. The PSB+3 powder ensures a low smoke output at the muzzle to ensure the best possible visibility for the shooter firing multiple…
