ANYONE involved in the car scene at any depth would be aware that mental health is a serious problem for our community. Most of the time, the issue lurks under the surface unnoticed, until one of our own dies by suicide. As a community, we react with shock and grief, but are quick to rally around the family, talk about the issue and encourage anyone in our circle who is suffering to reach out. All of which is a massive improvement on what used to happen, as our society as a whole comes to better understand mental health, reduce the stigma around it and treat is as the health issue it is. Even so, we’ve got a long way to go. Raising awareness and improving understanding is great, but the next…

riot act

THE recent Kenda Radial Riot round at Willowbank Raceway was very likely the greatest radial drag event ever held in Australia. With a star-studded line-up of cars, promoters Justin Simpson and Scott Harker threw everything at the event, and the results spoke for themselves. This was just the second Radial Riot, with entrant numbers up from 148 to 165. A great element of this event is the seeding system, where every final sees a racer from the top half of the field race a car from the bottom half, unlike the regular process of the number-one qualifier taking on the lowest-seeded qualifier. The track preparation was incredible, with famed US track prep king Kurt Johnson flown in. As a result, records tumbled and PBs were had from early in the day. After some…

holden’s project monaro nears completion

ONLY a few issues back we introduced you to Holden’s Project Monaro build, which at the time was very much in its infancy. Now it’s a very different story, with the Monaro almost reborn and ready to be handed off to one lucky person. The car was sent to a Holden dealer to be pulled back to its bare bones, ready for a thorough going-over after 15 years and 200,000km of work logged. The whole driveline was dropped out for a rebuild, with the body getting sent to Dominic Mazzeo at B&A Motor Body Repairs for some loving, along with a fresh lick of custom-mixed PPG paint. While the car was to remain as an auto LS1 package, the engine was sent to one of the best in the business for a…

duncan blakley

AUSSIE cars getting love overseas is always a humbling sight, and our friends over the ditch in NZ are hiding some really neat examples. We had a chat to Duncan Blakley about his super-nice ’65 XP Falcon coupe, the culmination of years of tinkering with toys. What first got you into cars? My older siblings and my dad were a big influence. There weren’t too many options in the 70s and 80s of getting around Auckland, which meant Dad was always fixing things in the shed or driveway. Motor mowers, bicycles, cars, motorbikes; you name it, he’d fixed it with my older brother Cliff, so I just learnt from them. From there, I trained as a fitter and turner and have pretty much fixed things since. What’s the story with your Falcon coupe? I…
