THANKS to everyone who took the time to vote in the Valvoline Street Machine Of The Year competition. Since 1988, it’s been the richest and most prestigious prize in our sport. The $20,000 winner-takes-all prize money comes from Valvoline, and the prestige is derived from the fact that it is voted solely by the street machining community – the ultimate in people power! SMOTY is a great gauge of where the scene is at, and if this year’s winner – Matt Morgillo’s HQ Statesman – is any guide, it seems street-driven pro street is still a hot ticket. Not only that, but it appears you don’t mind body styles that are a bit out of the ordinary these days. Historically, the majority of SMOTY winners have been coupes, but this year…

SINCE its inception in Sydney in 1994, Supernats has had many homes, including Oran Park Raceway, Sydney Motorsport Park, Sydney Dragway and last year’s Supernats Burnout Party in Stawell, Victoria. But for 2019, Supernats took over Mallala Motorsport Park, just north of Adelaide, for three days of action including off-street drags, powerskids, track cruising and burnouts. Plenty of high-quality cars turned out, including Dave Cufone’s Nova, Tom Beltrame’s LandCruiser, Jason Ballard’s HELLRAZOR Holden Cruze and Jono Kelly’s 3FIVE5 VK Commodore. For Jason Ballard and his blown, injected 2015 Cruze, it was a hugely successful weekend. The pair won the Pro Class burnout comp, came second in the powerskids, and took out Show & Go Grand Champion. “The weekend turned out excellent,” said Supernats promoter Ahmet ‘The Mad Turk’ Sehirligil. “For our first event in…

BREAK THE DROUGHT THIS drought is a real bastard of a thing. Our primary producers have been doing it tough for a long time, and a group of car enthusiasts in northern Queensland are doing what they can to bring some relief to local farmers. Appropriately taking place on Australia Day 2020 at Palmyra Dragway, Drag The Farmers Out Of Drought will feature drag racing, dyno runs, a show ’n’ shine, trade displays and much more! It’s a family-friendly affair, so get along and support the event, have fun with your toys and help raise some coin to assist those in need. GET EDUCATED OUR friends at Shannons Club have uploaded a culturally significant, four-part doco series to the interwebs. Entitled End Of An Era, the series charts the rise and fall of…

DON’T do the crime if you can’t do the time, the old saying goes, but it might have been worth stealing a pack of Tim-Tams to have been involved in the rebuild of this ripper 1986 VL Commodore SS Group A tribute. It’s the result of the awe-inspiring efforts of inmates at Junee Correctional Centre in southern NSW. And you can win it! This Commodore is the third giveaway car to be rebuilt at Junee; a Holden Monaro and One Tonner have also been resto-modded and given away in support of charity in recent years. Working on cars like this isn’t just something to keep the inmates occupied. There’s been a decade-long partnership between the GEO Group (which operates the centre on behalf of the NSW Government) and TAFE NSW. Within the…

Big smoky burnouts over the startline area is an absolute no-no. The burnout tears the rubber and the compound off the track WHEN you’ve got a serious race meeting coming up and you need to get 4000hp down your race track, who you gonna call? Kurt Johnson, owner of Total Venue Concepts. Kurt has had an incredible career, including five years with the Schumacher Top Fuel Team, stints as marketing coordinator for the NHRA and director of operations at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana, and he sits on countless US automotive boards. He spends his weekends looking for the perfect right-hand wave, and in his spare time he manages a team of nine, preparing over 80 drag racing tracks throughout the USA. We caught up with him at Willowbank after he…
