CHOOSE YOUR ESSENTIALS… Start with these must-have items 1 FABRICS Begin with either aida or evenweave. Aida is best for beginners, with regular woven blocks and obvious holes. It’s stiffer than evenweave, but will soften slightly as you work. The most common fabric is 14-count aida. It’s harder to work fractional stitches on aida, as you’ll need to make an extra hole in the fabric, in the centre of the aida block Evenweave is a lovely fabric to work on when you have a little more experience. The fibres aren’t woven in blocks as with aida, so it’s softer and the fine weave has more threads-per-inch – the most commonly used is 28-count. One stitch is usually worked over two threads of the fabric so it has an equivalent design size of 14-count aida. Cross…

faby’s masterclass

This series has been designed especially for those of you who are keen to learn new stitches. The designs will cover a variety of styles and themes, and every pattern is small enough that it can be stitched over a weekend or in between larger projects. My patterns are simple to follow, and I’ll give you clear step-by-step tutorials for any special stitches. I do recommend practising the new stitches on a piece of scrap fabric before you start your main design. Enjoy! How to… stitch kloster blocks 1 Stitch five satin stitches (straight stitches next to each other, covering four strands of fabric) to form the top of the kloster block. Stitch from the middle of the block outwards so the stitches look the same on both sides of the fabric,…

welcome

With life not quite back to ‘normal’ just yet and the days getting shorter, I can’t think of a better place to be than in my favourite chair with my current cross stitch WIP. There’s plenty in this issue to entice you to the sofa during the winter months, too. You might recognise our cover stars this issue – it’s been several years since they’ve appeared in the magazine, and I’m thrilled to welcome back the adorable Country Companions duo, Ed and Edwina Hedgehog. Find them on page 10. We’ve included several projects that are perfect to decorate your home this holiday. Delve into Fiona Baker’s stunning nostalgic lamp post design (p36) or Jenny Van De Wiele’s cardinals hoop (p26) for statement wall art. Christmas dinner isn’t complete without a classic…
