in the interim

When thinking about the Corvette’s place in automotive history let yourself begin with this fact: Since 1953, Chevrolet has produced 1.5 million of America’s first and most popular sports car and continues to do so. Chevrolet has manufactured Corvettes for 66-plus years, making the Corvette one of the most popular sports cars of all time. Pretty heady stuff. In the world of collectible cars there are many to choose from and it doesn’t matter whether you love a General Motors product, Ford, Chrysler or any number of other hood ornaments. The fact remains that Corvettes have always been at the forefront of collectible material. It all started with what we Corvette types refer to as the C1 and C2 … 1953-’62 and then 1963-’67. But why were (are) these Corvettes and other…

out of dan’s shadow

Almost every piece of research you can find about Ronald “Skip” Hudson describes him the same way: some version of “friend of Dan Gurney.” It’s understandable. While Gurney became an internationally famous driver, team owner and car builder, Hudson’s racing career, successful as it was, came primarily from West Coast sports car events. Gurney and Hudson were close. During Gurney’s first trip to Bonneville in 1950, he earned an SCTA timing tag for going 130 and change driving Hudson’s Model A roadster. When Gurney was part of the team that first drove Shelby Cobras in international competition, at the Daytona International in 1963, Hudson was in another of Shelby’s cars. He finished second in class, while Gurney was a DNF. Hudson started racing sports cars in the mid-1950s. His earliest rides were…

chillin’ in the back

Q Hello. I have been in love with Corvettes and have desired to own one most of my life. Luckily, I was recently able to purchase my first Corvette: a blue 1992 C4.I am writing to you in hope you can help settle an argument between a Corvette buddy and me. I told him about one of my first memories of riding in a Corvette. The story goes like this. As a child in Pennsylvania, the father of one of my friends had a 1964 Corvette coupe. I can remember riding in the back seat and looking up out of the large back window. Well, that’s when my friend started laughing and called me crazy. He told me that there was never a Corvette produced with a back seat. All I…

it’s all in the fundamentals

You purchased a Corvette, proving you have fallen head over throttle foot infatuated with America’s first and truly world-class sports car. Based on this fact, the assumption is made you like to drive. Especially when the driving includes long distances that turns telephone poles into a picket fence! There’s a reason why Corvettes have an engine bay full of horsepower, an undercarriage rolling on state-of-the-art suspension and an interior loaded with technology that pampers and enlightens you all the while you are in total control. It’s a world-class car in every aspect. A Corvette can say a lot about you just resting in your garage, sitting in your driveway or carefully “end parked” at the local shopping mall. But all of this pales in comparison to the breathtaking exhilaration one feels…
