Private Game Magazine

Issue 6 2019

In 2013, it was estimated that approximately 17 percent of land in South Africa make up the private wildlife industry. Value chains include: • Breeding, which includes high-value and plains game; • Hunting, which includes biltong and trophy hunting; • By-products, such as game-meat, leather products, horns and curios; • Ecotourism, such as photographic safaris, game viewing and trails. Wildlife Ranching magazine content is conceptualised and produced based on editorial pillars that represent the wildlife ranching industry value chains, with a focus on the issues that matter most. taking control of your future

There are clearly a number of areas in our lives as game ranchers where it is now time to stand up, be counted and take responsibility for our own future. To name a few: 1. Under which department does game ranching resort and, more importantly, what is it that we want from our regulators? 2. Disease control in South Africa – how do we ensure the threats and challenges facing our and the whole livestock industry’s future are best managed and hopefully overcome? 3. The negative view of our livestock and in particular the game ranching industry and its impact on biodiversity and conservation. A lot of debate and at times downright aggression have followed the listing of most game species under the Animal Improvement Act (AIA) by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform…

the future of this magazine

“A brand new, top quality hard copy AND digital magazine, which will appeal to and reach a much wider readership will be published by this same award-winning team.” Firstly, congratulations to MLP Media, the editorial and publishing team of the KRUGER MAGAZINE , for recently receiving SANParks’ prestigious award – the Kudu Award for Media Contribution to Conservation and Eco-Tourism! As all and sundry have already been advised, the print form of Wildlife Ranching magazine is to be replaced by a digimag. The exciting news is that a brand new, top-quality hard copy AND digital magazine, which will appeal to and reach a much wider readership (see following pages for the announcement), will be published by this same award-winning team. It has been necessary for the MLP team to look ahead, see the…

Our trusted expert contributors will develop curated content to not only inform our loyal readers and current customers of both wildlife opportunities and challenges, but to also provide an engaging voice for the private wildlife sector to stimulate innovation in global conservation. Executive editor, Dr Peter Oberem, states: “With its magnificent and diverse wildlife heritage, Southern Africa plays a vital role in conserving the world’s biological diversity. The region boasts an extensive network of public parks, including international icons such as the Kruger, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Kgalagadi, Etosha, Chobe and Hwange, several of which also form part of larger transfrontier conservation areas. “The region is known for its excellent track record of conserving threatened species such as elephant, rhino, Cape mountain zebra, bontebok, black wildebeest, cheetah and lion. An important aspect is the unique…

publishing editor’s note

One of the most effective tools for strategic planning is to use the PESTLE analysis ( Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental) as a guideline to examine opportunities and threats. During 2019, our trusted expert contributors developed curated content around these topics to inform our loyal readers and current customers of both wildlife opportunities and challenges. In this final issue of Wildlife Ranching magazine we contemplate environmental factors. Environmental factors, also known as ecological factors, refer to the variables pertaining to the physical environment of the planet we live on, inclusive of climate change, pollution and animal extinction. In our lead article, ‘THE BIGGER PICTURE’, Michael ‘t Sas-Rolfes explains that environment and human development are linked issues that need to be addressed together. Michael concludes: “Integrating wildlife industries with broader environmental concerns will…
