How’s your summer going? Mine has been pretty spectacular so far. The weather has been amazing – let’s hope that me writing this doesn’t jinx all the sunshine we’re enjoying – I’ve celebrated a landmark birthday, I’m going to Wimbledon and my husband is even dragging me to the Formula One British Grand Prix at Silverstone. I certainly wouldn’t claim to be a huge F1 fan, but I’ve decided my forties are going to be all about pushing myself out of my comfort zone and trying new things. So far, I’ve tried a new workout – WH Deputy Editor Victoria Joy and I went to a barre class at Define London recently and it was tough; a totally different type of training for me. Plus, I’m taking a new approach to…

buy a freshly baked loaf to be a better person

Smiling sweetly in the face of blatant queue-jumping; carrying the bags for life of your elders – there’s a reason you’re your best self at the supermarket. While the age-old tactic of pumping out the aroma of a freshly baked loaf is designed to make you spend more (who can resist a fresh-from-the-oven bagel?), it turns out it could also be making you kinder. That’s according to a study published in The Journal Of Social Psychology. In a bid to establish a link between pleasant aromas and increased altruism, researchers from the University of Southern Brittany tracked the responses of strangers when a volunteer ‘accidentally’ dropped something. While 52% of people stopped to help retrieve the item outside a clothing shop, this soared to 77% when the same experiment was…

the big question

If all we’re talking about here is a few puffs on the odd night out and the occasional toke on a joint, you needn’t worry about lasting damage down there. If you lit up regularly, however, it’s a bit murkier. ‘Current cigarette smokers take longer to get pregnant, have increased complications and have lower pregnancy rates after fertility treatments,’ explains Dr Sheeva Talebian, an NYC-based fertility specialist. ‘In women who used to smoke, these same findings are noted, but to a lesser degree,’ she adds. It’s also known that smoking accelerates the rate of egg loss. Unfortunately, a lack of research means that we don’t know as much about the fertility consequences of cannabis use. ‘I think it’s very likely we’ll find a negative impact similar to that of tobacco,…
