united we stand

I WAS HOPING not to have to write about any looming threats to our sport for a while, but shooting is under attack again. After wreaking havoc in the countryside by lodging a legal challenge that forced Natural England to revoke general licences used for the control of pest birds for almost two months earlier this year, Chris Packham and his Wild Justice friends have turned their attention to game shooting. The crowd-funded campaign claims the Government could be breaching the EU habitats directive by failing to carry out an investigation into the impact of the release of game birds into the wild. This looks very much like another veiled attack on the whole shooting community, and we seem to be well past the thin end of the wedge. Those who oppose what…

unleash hell!

There are times when shooting from a hide or setting up an ambush off a bipod are the perfect way to bag your quarry – but there are plenty of other occasions when you’ll need to stay mobile and go on a roving hunt. And it’s at times like these that carrying a rifle that’s a little shorter and a lot lighter than the norm really is a bonus. Rifles like the GunPower HellCat. GunPower is probably best known for the Stealth – a single-shot, takedown PCP that has a rear-mounted buddy bottle acting as both butt and cheekpiece. But there are no fewer than eight iterations of the base rifle, even including a target gun. The HellCat is one of these variants, and this is very much a lightweight hunter,…

news in brief quick shots...

GOING FOR GOLD A new type of ammo that’s been specially designed to complement the steel BB-firing version of the Lee-Enfield SMLE has been unveiled by The Shooting Party. Lee Enfield BBGold precision-ground 4.5mm BBs weigh 4.7 grains, and are copper-plated during production to provide optimum corrosion resistance and give them their ‘gold’ colouring. They are supplied in transparent tubs that are both child-proof and spill-proof. BBGold are highly consistent for weight and size, and while they make the perfect companion to the SMLE, they can be used in any BB gun. Lee Enfield BBGold ammo has a suggested retail price of £9.99 per tub of 1,500. For more details, contact The Shooting Party (www.shootingparty.uk) on 015 4348 0361.
