musical chairs

THE OFF-SEASON musical chairs are in full swing and under-the-table deals are now being served up as the main course. The biggest surprise came from Australian Supercross Championship runner-up Luke Clout, who announced only days after the series that he would ride for Penrite Honda this year in the MX1 class of the MX Nationals. THE BIGGEST SURPRISE CAME FROM AUSTRALIAN SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP RUNNER-UP LUKE CLOUT The deal also includes a gig on a 250 in rounds of the AMA West Coast Supercross Championship starting at Anaheim 1. Clout is being joined in the US on a Penrite CRF250R by ASX SX2 winner Mitchell Oldenburg but when he returns home he will be teamed with Perth’s Kyle Webster, who will sit under the Penrite tent but ride a CRF250R in MX2. ktm confirms clone program

SOIL SAMPLE HOT OFF THE PRESS GAS GAS MOTORCYCLES AS we know them will disappear this year, with future enduro models to be built on the KTM platform already used by Husqvarna. KTM Senior Product Manager Off-road, Joachim Sauer, told Enduro Magazine that Pierer Mobility (formerly KTM Industries AG) would continue to build Gas Gas bikes in Spain but that they would be heavily based on KTM designs. That means they will run the same chrome-moly frames built by WP in Munderfing, Austria, and probably the same engines, with Gas Gas needing to replace its ageing two-stroke enduro motor to meet Euro 5. Sauer didn’t go into detail about the exact specifications of the MY21 models but he did confirm they will run suspension from WP, which Pierer owns, and not…

chad reed calling it quits

THIS WILL BE Chad Reed’s final year as a full-time rider. The two-time AMA Supercross premier class champion revealed in the pre-race press conference at AUS-X Open Melbourne that the event would be his final race in Australia as a factory-backed rider and that 2020 would be his final year racing full-time. He did not discount the possibility of returning for one-off events like retired athletes such as Ryan Villopoto and Ricky Carmichael. “I love dirtbikes, that’s what kept me in it this long,” Reed said during the press conference. “This will be my final race in Australia as a full-time racer but my goal is to do off-season races.” Reed had hinted during SX-Open Auckland that the AUS-X Open could be his final race in Australia as a pro. He broke…

The New South Wales rider will debut for his new Honda team in the AMA Supercross series, where he plans to race several rounds of the West Coast Lites Championship before returning home for the MX Nats. “I am excited to get back to America and race the best supercross riders in the world,” he said. “I feel I am a better rider than I was when I raced there three years ago. dungey turns red

RYAN DUNGEY HAS parted ways with KTM after an eight-year love affair and joined Factory Connection Racing as part owner of the Geico Honda team. The move will see Dungey apply his professional racing experience to the 250 squad’s AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross campaigns featuring Hunter and Jett Lawrence. The five-time AMA Supercross Champion and four-time AMA Pro Motocross Champion will work with the Lawrence brothers and a host of other riders who Dungey hopes to build into champions. “Factory Connection Racing is a premier team that has had a lot of success and has a great line-up of talented riders,” he said. “I’ll be able to apply my experience and knowledge to the next generation and future generations of riders and, because I’m a part owner, it’s something long-term that…

easy tiger

TRIUMPH HAS UNVEILED its new Tiger 900 adventure bike. The model will come in five variants but the two we’re interested in are the Tiger 900 Rally and Tiger 900 Rally Pro. As the name suggests, the Rally versions feature beefed-up components which Triumph claims give them more off-road prowess and, from looking at the specifications, those claims aren’t BS. The Rally and Rally Pro both roll on 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked tubeless rims. Front suspension is a 45mm upside-down Showa fork with preload, rebound damping and compression damping adjustment and 240mm of travel. The shock is a fully adjustable Showa unit with 230mm of travel. The frame appears largely unchanged, with the engine being a bored version of the three-cylinder Tiger 800 engine that boasts 10 per cent more…
