killing time

TRY TO REMAIN POSITIVE, ENCOURAGE YOUR MATES BY CALLING THEM AND WATCH REPLAYS OF YOUR FAVOURITE RACES I THINK I MIGHT have invented a new saying: “What you do in isolation stays in isolation!” Not because I’m discouraged by those “social media influencers” keeping me entertained during these tough times but because after just a few weeks of “lockdown” I’m already over it. I want this period to become a distant memory, fast! Sadly I can’t see that happening for some time. If the government is telling the truth (when have they ever lied?) then we are in this for at least six months. On March 30 some state governments banned the use of state forests for recreational activities and, some weeks before that, most ride parks were ordered to close. Unless…

from inside

TAHLIA O’HARE WEST AUSTRALIAN TAHLIA O’Hare (TJ) jetted to Europe in February last year with her sights set on Women’s Motocross Championship glory. Riding for KTM Diga Junior Racing she finished eighth in the Women’s EMX championship and twenty-second in the WMX title after her season was cut short due to an arm injury sustained at the MXGP of Czech Republic. Full recovered and ready to race, TJ is now stuck at her European base in Belgium while the world battles the pandemic. ADB: How has the current coronavirus situation affected you? TJ: It’s pretty crazy times at the moment! I have stayed in Europe as we didn’t know how the situation would play out and I wasn’t sure how it would affect me if the races started back and the borders stayed closed…

buy a beer to save a pub!

COLLAPSING ON A BAR stool at the pub after a long day in the saddle is one of the best parts of riding a dirtbike besides the actual riding, although some deluded people might argue otherwise. But with coronavirus safety measures forcing pubs around the country to shut their doors or offer takeaway booze only, there might not be a pub to visit once covid-19 parks up. However, there is a way you can help, and it benefits everyone. Carlton & United Breweries in partnership with the Australian Hotels Association has launched For The Love Of Your Local, a campaign to help save pubs. CUB will match your beer purchase with a free one once your favourite bush pub reopens, meaning you get two for the price of one! Head to www.loveofyour…

ténéré sales soar

YAMAHA HAS TOPPED sales in the off-road sector for the first quarter of this year, according to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. The Japanese manufacturer topped several categories including Enduro, Off-Road, Adventure Touring, thanks to the new XTZ690, and overall sales (road and dirt). Yamaha sold 347 Ténéré 700s in the first quarter, surpassing what all but four of its rivals sold for the whole of last year. It smashed Suzuki’s DR650SE (119, -1.7%) out of the park despite being twice the price, with the BMW R1250GS Adventure third with 100 sales (+3.1%). Further down the Adventure Touring list was the Ténéré 700’s closest rival, the KTM 790 Adventure R, which sold just 71 units after a stellar debut last year saw it sell 467 in…

rieju reveals 2021 design

THE NEW OWNER of the GasGas EC platform, Rieju, has revealed what the enduro bike will look like under its watch. The 2021 300cc two-stroke will headline the brand’s “hard off-road” range and will be called the MR in honour of Rieju’s 1984 MR80 ISDT bike. The MR range will consist of the MR Racing, MR Pro and MR Ranger, mirroring the old GasGas lineup. Rieju has released specs for the MR Racing. It’s largely unchanged from the bike we knew as the EC300. KYB suspension front and rear, FMF muffler, tapered handlebar, steel frame, slim headlight and the engine, right down to the clutch cover, looks the same. A keen eye will notice the axle puller on the front and pleated seatcover, both features on the GasGas GP model. The…

riding in state forests

RIDING IN STATE forests is not allowed under the Federal Government’s laws restricting movement, in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus. The National Cabinet’s instructions to all Australians are to stay home and only leave it for shopping for what you need (food and necessary supplies), medical or health care needs, exercise in compliance with the public gathering requirements, and work or study if you can’t do your job or learn remotely. You might argue trailbike riding falls under the exercise category but it doesn’t. HQ Plantations, which manages 330,000ha of forest in Queensland, said: “Motorised recreation (4WD, motor bikes, etc) does not meet the federal government’s essential-activity criteria and is not permitted until restrictions are lifted.” Plus, there is also the point that you should not be travelling far…
