preserving the bush

I had an encounter with a local National Park Ranger yesterday afternoon that really made me stop and think. I was minding my own business on a craggy clifftop just to the north of a very popular coastal tourist hotspot, enjoying a late arvo beverage and watching my dog try his best to collect as much sand as possible so that he could then shake it off in the cab of the GU, when an older model Hilux complete with firefighting gear and all the usual Ranger fruit pulled up next to me. My first thought was, crap, the dog but in this part of the woods, he couldn’t have cared less, instead he wandered over and after the customary G’Day (obviously noting my local number plates) asked my opinion of…

the dirty 30 is back!

Anyone who has ever built a 4WD up will know the excitement and pure joy of when all of the hard work you’ve put in finally materialises into the finished product. The Dirty 30 sat beside my shed for over a year and didn’t move after the body was so rusted and the chassis so badly damaged that it was unsafe for tracks, let alone the road. I remember looking in the 30 after it had been parked up for a few months and a bunch of mice had shredded an old paper map up and made a nest under the seat. It was very disheartening that my favourite 4WD of all time, the one that I had created well over 400,000km worth of memories was an undrivable, rusted up…

tackling 6 stage

I’ve been saying it for a while and I’ll say it again, my favourite type of 4WDing is when it’s tough, slow and super technical. Don’t get me wrong I froth on touring and camping too, but there’s something about the tough tracks that appeals to me. In fact it appealed to me enough to make me want to completely change my vehicles driveline and suspension setup. And after almost a year of running the solid axle swap, am I glad I did it? More than words can describe. It’s not for everyone, and some would say I would have been better off buying a Patrol or a Cruiser, but a tough as nails all-rounder HiLux has been my dream 4WD for as long as I can remember and I’m…

keeping in touch

DESTROYING CAMPSITES Hi Graham, like many others I have been reading the mags and watching the DVDs for several years now. I have been a keen 4WDer for over 30 years and just love the bush and all its beauty. What I have also noticed is that as more and more people are getting out there enjoying the tracks and the camps I am also seeing more 4WD grubs destroying so many places that have been almost pristine for decades. In recent years I have changed the way I camp by moving away from having roaring fires and being more mindful of leaving as little impact on the site I stay as possible. I like to pride myself on the fact that when I leave a camp, I leave little or no…
