editor’s letter

Somewhere between the pages of the second holiday novel, the thought bubbles float into view, hovering in the space between sunglasses and book/view. In the form of notes to self, they mount the case for starting the year on a super-positive, organised high. Especially if you finished 2018 at a gallop. From research suggesting people with clean houses are healthier than those with messy houses, to reports that depression and fatigue are higher in women living in cluttered homes, there are myriad reasons to stay on top of things. The good news is you can get back to that novel or socialising right now, because time is on your side… You can mosey through this magazine at your leisure and let the organising ideas wash over you, then put them into…

My husband commented on the freshness of the articles and noted that many of the featured houses were set in the country or had a rural theme. You showcased the importance and necessity of outdoor living and lifestyle in this wonderful land, despite the widespread drought. Even when the view from your house is dry and dusty, you can still dream of when the rains will come. A visual feast Your Christmas cover was absolutely stunning, a gorgeous feast for the eyes that made me excited about my own Christmas table. Thank you so much for another year of great reading and allowing me to peep into some beautiful, inspirational homes. Mariea Payne, Carindale, Queensland In stitches When I saw your magazine’s logo stitched in gold thread on the December cover, I was so impressed.…

Creative talents are drawn to this house. Noted 20th-century portrait artist Owen Garde used to reside here, painting in what’s now the main bedroom and teaching art students in the old garage. Today, star florist Debra Hayes lives and works in the elegantly restored period home. It’s hard to imagine the sorry state it was in 15 years ago, when Debra and her husband Tristan Whelan, new parents of baby Connor, were looking for more space. Yet as soon as she spotted the 1940s Arts and Crafts-style home, one of the first built in this north-western suburb of Perth, Debra was sold. “I was instantly taken in by the street presence, the style and grand frontage,” she says. “And I knew it would be ours.” At that time Debra had just sold…

MY FIRST REAL JOB Manic Botanic, the flower shop I started when I was just 23. OUR FIRST HOME AS A COUPLE We lived in the cutest blue weatherboard home with a rambling cottage garden. The previous owner was an artist and, funnily enough, our current home was also once owned by an artist. I’M READING Winging It by Emma Isaacs. I feel big growth is on the horizon for my business and this book is about having the courage to go for it. I’M LISTENING TO Podcasts. My favourite is Chat 10 Looks 3 with Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb. They inspire me to do more, cook more, read more. FAVOURITE SUMMER COCKTAIL I love a gin and tonic after work with the crew. ‘We find ourselves attracted to homes with unique personalities.’ BEST COOKBOOK…
