I was talking to one of my idiot motorcycle mates just the other day. We were ruminating on our time riding bikes. Which, when you are as old as he and I, amounts to a reasonably lengthy period of time. You wouldn’t want to be hanging by the genitals for anywhere near as long. Yes, we are “experienced”. The convo got around to the things that have changed over that period of time. Like when I first got on the road it was on a Kawasaki Z400, from a time when the Japanese thought that copying what the Poms were doing would capture the western market. life’s a bike

Do you ever have those life-affirming moments that remind you why you got hooked on motorcycling in the first place? Well, I’m just back from a weekend full of them! Perfect weather, fast winding roads and the company of good mates will do it every time. The first moment occurred on the Saturday morning as we descended Clyde Mountain from Braidwood down to Batemans Bay on the NSW south coast. Remember the days when a big bike was 500, 650 or, bugger me, an enormous 750? Nowadays, 800cc is classified as “middle class”. But notice how all the major and some minor manufacturers are producing damn fine middle-weight bikes. They make a lot of sense: lighter weight, sufficient power to cruise along at legal speeds, and with plenty on tap for licence-losing velocities. The big-bruiser Tiger XR1200 has a smaller sibling that’s been around for a while now.
