will new eco rules mean it’s goodbye to cheap cars?

MOST car companies are focused on electrifying their line-ups by the end of this decade. But what of the cars we’re meant to drive between now and then? Skoda boss Thomas Schäfer issued a stark warning on this matter to us when we caught up with him last week. The European Commission is currently considering various proposals for its Euro 7 vehicle regulations, likely to become mandatory around 2025. And if they opt for the more extreme set of possible rules, Schäfer says, we’ll see the end of the sub-£20,000 new car as we know it. “If Euro 7 comes in, in the way everybody says it will, that will make the Fabia 5,000 Euros more expensive, at least,” Schäfer told us. “The impact on small cars would be proportionally much higher…

new merc blitz 19 models on their way

● German brand outlines plans for unprecedented product push ● Strong showing for ICE as firm transitions to hybrids and full EVs James_Brodie@autovia.co.uk @jimmybrods MERCEDES is preparing for a product push quite unlike any other in the brand’s history. While in recent times the firm has focused its efforts on its SUV line-up and establishing its new EQ sub-brand, the next few years will see far wider scope in its new-car road map. Fresh coupés, convertibles, people carriers, mega off-roaders, hypercars, hyper-luxury cars, plus plug-in hybrid and fully electric AMG models are all on the horizon, delivering a 19-model-strong storm before the end of 2024. However, one of the most important models in this huge rollout will be as conventional as a contemporary Mercedes can get. It comes in the form of the next-generation GLC,…

velar purification tech is a breath of fresh air

LAND Rover has given the Range Rover Velar a minor update for 2021, adding some new technology and refreshing the car’s spread of cosmetic options. The Velar gets Land Rover’s Cabin Air Purification Plus system, which now monitors the level of CO2 inside the car and ventilates the cabin if levels get too high. Land Rover’s also added over-the-air update functionality for the Velar’s infotainment set-up, and a rear-view camera is now standard across the range. There are a pair of new colour options, too: Ostuni Pearl White and Lantau Bronze.…

new z car turns up the heat on rivals

● Nissan back with more power ● Sports car won’t be sold in UK Luke_Wilkinson@autovia.co.uk @LT_Wilkinson NISSAN’S long line of Z-brand sports cars stretches back to 1969, with the original Datsun 240Z. Now the brand has revealed the latest model to carry the iconic badge, but UK customers won’t be offered it. Simply called the Z, the new arrival is designed to rival the Toyota Supra and new BMW 2 Series Coupé. Nissan has confirmed only a US launch for the car, and European emissions targets make sales unlikely here. The Z is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, which produces 400bhp and 475Nm of torque. That’s 30 per cent more power than the old 370Z and 31bhp more than the latest BMW M240i. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual…

land rover unleashes ultimate sport svr

LAND Rover has revealed a more luxurious version of the 567bhp Range Rover Sport SVR, called the Ultimate Edition. The new SUV will make its official debut at Salon Privé in Blenheim Palace this September. Built by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) department, the Ultimate Edition gets a range of styling revisions over the standard SVR, including black 22-inch forged alloys, black calipers and a new vented carbon-fibre bonnet. The badges and exterior brightwork have also been swapped for gloss-black replacements. Land Rover’s new paint schemes include Maya Blue Gloss and Marl Grey Gloss. Both have reflective glass-flake particles mixed through the base coat, which is said to give “an intense star-like sparkle”. The changes continue inside, with buyers getting black anodised metal paddleshifters, model-specific illuminated tread plates and unique…
