egg on our faces

@MattCBoxingNews Editor EVER underestimate the wily old banger. Kiko Martínez was last week given no chance whatsoever by Boxing News, first in our written preview for his fight with Kid Galahad and then again, by me, on our weekly podcast. But the 35-year-old proved us wrong and likely most of you, too. In a contest that triggered memories of Dillian Whyte being socked to defeat by an all but washed-up Alexander Povetkin last year, Kiko looked every day of his 17-year career for four and three-quarter rounds until he turned the fight with one hellacious blast in the fifth. Fortunate to be allowed to continue – or not, considering what happened next – Galahad was then knocked cold mere seconds into the sixth. It was the kind of shock that makes boxing such…

‘all i can do is keep looking spectacular’

Leading welterweight HIS is a very big fight for me because Shawn Porter could potentially be looked at as an undefeated fighter. He had three close fights that could have gone his way but didn’t go his way. Shawn Porter is no pushover, no slouch and that’s the reason why this is one of the biggest fights of my career to date on paper. I need to be on my A-game each and every time I set foot in the ring, not just for Shawn Porter. Shawn can box, he can brawl, he can bang, he can be rough in there. He’s strong, fast, he’s got good head movement and footwork. That will pose a lot of threats in the ring. It’s always about simply having your hand raised, I never go in…

unstoppable marathon man

AFTER a truly unforgettable October I just want to extend my thanks and appreciation to a few people. I completed five marathons over the month: (Chester, Manchester, Bruges, Liverpool and the Potteries Marathon route in Stoke). It was to raise awareness and funds for Ringside Charitable Trust. To every boxer and boxing fan who replied or retweeted my request, thank you as it's huge to get the name of the charity out there to raise awareness and interest and ultimately, support. Everyone who donated deserves a massive thank you, we ended up with £580 and a further £500 from my employers charity fundraising match scheme (thank you Leila at the Ardonagh Trust). "Swifty" Smith for the selfie and being so effusive in your congratulations in Revolutions when we met, lovely…

HOW DO KID GALAHAD AND TERRI HARPER REBUILD FROM HERE? Skye Nicolson Tokyo Olympian Terri should probably have a warm up fight. The fight she had at the weekend was quite evenly matched and that’s hard for someone coming off two hand surgeries and a year out of the ring. She could possibly look at moving up a division. Kid Galahad could also go up in weight and have a fight for confidence. Lisa Whiteside C'wealth Games gold medallist A tough comeback but that’s the test a great champion passes. Galahad was in with a real puncher in Kiko Martínez but I was surprised at how hittable he was. Maybe he looked past him. Terri had been inactive due to injury but her opponent boxed well. Terri has achieved so much at a young age, she…

this bud’s for you

1. YURIORKIS GAMBOA Crawford’s true breakout performance arrived in June 2014 when the world watched him tame the significant threat of undefeated Cuban amateur star Gamboa inside nine rounds. 2. VIKTOR POSTOL When meeting Crawford in 2016, Postol had just defeated Lucas Matthysse and was unbeaten in 28 fights. But that didn’t stop the Ukrainian being dominated over 12 rounds by Crawford. 3. EGIDIJUS KAVALIAUSKAS Another of many unbeaten opponents Crawford has slayed, Lithuania’s Kavaliauskas met the American in 2019 and was duly broken up inside nine rounds and stopped. 4. JEFF HORN A year after upsetting Manny Pacquiao in his homeland, unbeaten Australian Jeff Horn lost in 2018 when taken apart by Crawford in nine rounds. 5. JULIUS INDONGO Having just outboxed Ricky Burns in impressive fashion in his previous fight, few would have expected the undefeated Julius…
