editor’s letter

Creativity is such… an interesting process, don’t you think? I will always be intrigued by the ways in which an idea becomes a reality. Take, for example, how this month’s cover story came to be. Firstly, in early July, I was at the couture shows in Paris. Of course, haute couture is always a divine whirlwind of lavish otherworldliness, but this season I was especially struck by the collections’ stunning sense of fantasy. A spark was lit. Unrelated to this, a few days later I happened to be thinking about Jourdan Dunn, the much-loved British model and general force for good. meet & greet

For A Certain Romance, on page 206, Vogue convened an epic coterie of models to wear the most spectacular newseason couture. Cover star Jourdan Dunn was a vision in Iris van Herpen; Winnie Harlow (left) and Anok Yai dazzled in Valentino; while Joan Smalls and Ugbad Abdi were no less the spectacle in Givenchy. Lineisy Montero sparkled in show-stopping Armani Privé; Tami Williams wore Dolce & Gabbana; Adwoa Aboah looked divine in Dior. Shanelle Nyasiase in Maison Margiela Artisanal (below left) and Duckie Thot in Schiaparelli completed the set, shot in the lush surrounds of Richmond Park. “I have always been enamoured with 18th-century British portrait and landscape painters, and how their work defined what England looked like,” says photographer Nick Knight of his shoot. “I wanted to redefine that…

peter lindbergh 1944-2019

Many photographers are captivated by female beauty, but no one has captured it in its raw form quite like Peter Lindbergh. Resolute in his loathing of retouching and visual manipulation, the gregarious German photographer, who died in September at the age of 74, saw power and poetry in individualism and imperfection. A specialist in timeless images that nevertheless proved era-defining, Lindbergh was a prolific contributor to British Vogue. Most recently, he photographed 15 women for the cover of the September 2019 Forces for Change issue, guest edited by HRH The Duchess of Sussex. “Peter was the only photographer who could have executed the vision shared by the Duchess and myself,” confirms editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. “His ability to see beauty in real people, and to capture their true identities with characteristic…
