You could describe the Outback as a fringing ring surrounding Australia’s vast inland desert, but — come on! — who or what wants to be described as a fringing ring? There’s nothing quite like a near-on vertical downhill descent to remind you of the real importance of low-range gearing in a 4WD, or in my case, engine braking. Yep, when gravity and Mother Nature team up to throw you a super steep curve ball, the last thing you want is to rely explicitly on your vehicle's braking system to keep your speed in check. Why? Well, apart from the increased chance you’ll have of braking traction and entering and losing control, you’ll probably have a hard time washing your duds out afterwards too! Now, last year, I made the decision to abandon the old 5-speed manual gearbox I’ve been rocking around the countryside for the last 15-odd years, in favour of a fancy 4-speed automatic transmission. ALL DRIVELINE components are crucial to your vehicle's reliability and performance, and low range gears are no exception. Plus, they're buried well within the transfer case, so it’s pretty hard to access if something goes wrong. With that in mind, you really want to make sure the parts you’re putting in are high quality and made to last. The problem is, it’s hard to tell the difference between a quality bit of kit and a cheap knock-off. For this build, I chose to buy the kit from Road Runner Offroad. The gears are made from Japanese alloy SCM415, which is known for its great strength and wear resistance. In fact, this particular metal has been tested and proven to outperform other materials used for the same application by most other suppliers.…

breaking losse in limmen

Our best paid plans went AWOL just 50km inside Limmen National Park when wheel bearings shattered by too many unrelenting NT tracks sent us limping back to Borroloola on the back of a tow-truck. After pulling an all-nighter in the McArthur River Camper Park, we set off again for round two with tougher bearings and lighter wallets, determined to shake out the fishing rods, stoke a campfire and lose ourselves in one of the most isolated wilderness areas in Australia’s far north. Etched with deep, emerald rivers and lily-covered lagoons, Limmen protects great swathes of woodlands and towering sandstone spires. Basic bush camping and corrugated access roads help deter all but the most passionate anglers and solitude-seekers, who arrive in well-stocked, offroad rigs for lengthy stays in the NT’s remote northeastern corner. Although access is restricted to high clearance 4WD vehicles and off-road rigs, Limmen’s tracks pose no technical difficulties. Rains can close the park anytime from November to May, so aim for a cool, dry, wintertime visit (June to August). Plan your trip at nt.gov.au/leisure and check track conditions before setting out at roadreport.nt.gov.au. For access to the Western Lost City, phone or visit the Limmen Ranger Station (08 8975 9940). CAMPING Basic national park campgrounds at Towns River, Butterfly Springs, Limmen Bight River and Southern Lost City provide toilets, picnic tables and fire pits.
