cruel reu nion

Laura Beattie, 25, Sheffield Hearing my phone buzz, I looked away from the telly. It was summer 2015, and I gasped when I opened Facebook Messenger. Hey, love, it’s your mum, the message read. I hadn’t seen my mum, Jayne Lewis, 45, since I was four. In fact, since Mum and Dad got divorced when me and my brother, Chris, 19, were little, we hadn’t seen much of her at all. All we had were vague memories of her face, her dark brown hair and her smile. The divorce hadn’t been amicable, and Dad was given sole custody of me and Chris. I often thought about Mum, wondered what she was like and what she was doing. After I turned 18, in 2011, I considered trying to get in touch with her, but I struggled to build up…

KISSING CULTURE • Whether on the lips, cheeks, head or hand, a kiss carries a differing social significance depending on the culture and context. • Out of 168 cultures, only 46 per cent of them kiss in the romantic sense. • The Mehinaku tribe in Brazil reportedly say that kissing is ‘gross’. • In Western cultures, kissing helps people re-establish and confirm their relationship. • In Guatemala, couples scream while kissing. The louder the scream, the stronger the love. • In Indonesia, couples caught kissing in public could face up to five years in jail! HISTORY OF KISSING Vedic texts from ancient India, which date back to the 2nd century, seem to talk about kissing, and devote an entire chapter to modes of kissing. After that, kissing became more widespread among the Romans, and early Christians often greeted…

finding dad

Nicola Teeling, 38, Haydock As a children’s entertainer, my kids’ dad Andrew, 40, was the ultimate fun dad. With his larger-than-life personality, he was always on hand to make them laugh. ‘More, Daddy!’ the kids squealed, their arms full of balloon animals. And, true to form, Andrew never complained when they begged him to blow up more animals or give them piggy-back rides around the living room. Even after we split in 2014, Kian, 13, Lexie, 11, and Skyla, seven, would stay with Andrew three nights a week, enjoying exclusive performances of his latest routines. Last Spring, after a phone call with Andrew, Kian seemed worried. ‘Dad said he wasn’t feeling too good,’ he said. I figured he’d just had a cold. But a few days later, I got a call from Andrew’s new partner – Andrew was…

on a roll

Sinead Hogan, 41, Cardiff Tucking into a packet of crisps, I only had five minutes before my class. As a teaching assistant for children with additional needs, I was attending a manual-handling day, where we were learning how to safely roll a pupil who was on a bed. Scoffing the lot, I wiped my hands clean, and was good to go! ‘Is everyone ready?’ the instructor asked. After a demo, we started to practice. One person would lie down on the bed, and two people would roll them over. But when it was my turn to lie down on the bed, things took an embarrassing turn. ‘Let’s have someone else over here as well,’ the instructor said. She’d drafted in an extra pair of hands because I was too big for two people to roll. And even with three…

ABritish sanctuary is home to this massive donkey, which is set to become the biggest in the world. The enormous young animal, called Derrick, is a staggering 16.3 Hands (5ft 7ins) tall – and is still growing. Whopping Derrick is an American Mammoth Jackstock – the largest breed in the world. The current record is held by Romulus in Texas, who measures 17 Hands (5ft 8ins). Derrick is now just an inch short, but his owners say he will easily become a world record holder for biggest donkey. The donkey lives at Radcliffe Donkey Sanctuary in Lincolnshire. Sanctuary owner Tracy Garton, 52, said: ‘He was big when he was born. ‘He hasn’t finished growing yet; they stop growing when they reach seven years old. ‘So he still has a lot of time.’ She said that despite his size,…
