We all need to have our own thing in life that makes us happy. Whether that’s a hobby, family or our career, our passions are what make us who we are. One person who knows all about individual interests is 74-year-old Garry (pg22). As an RAF veteran, he loves nothing more than spending his days playing war-themed video games. Connecting with other users, his love of gaming saw him take a trip to the United States to finally meet his favourite competitor in real life. Flying for the skies, Garry proves that age is just a number. As for Mandee (pg18), she loves going to Alton Towers with her two children. After nearly getting stuck in the Galactica ride, she decided to make a change. Now, instead of spending her time in…

perfect catch

Sharon*, 63 Sitting on the sofa with a cuppa, I was ready to settle in for the evening. Just then, my mobile phone pinged. Hey beautiful, how are you? the message read. Despite being in my 60s, those words sent butterflies through my stomach. It was back in September 2016, and I’d been chatting online to someone called Kevin Churchill for a few weeks. When my marriage broke down back in 2001, I’d moved to the UK from my home in South Africa, taking my two kids, Sarah*, now 34, and Peter*, now 32, with me. But moving to a new country meant I was really lonely. The only people I knew were my kids and the people I worked with, and the older I got, the more difficult I found it to meet anyone. I’d resigned myself…

a reassuring friend

Helen Dempster, 48, Hampshire When my grandfather Eric, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 62 and then Parkinson’s at 64, the whole family was shocked. He and my grandmother Mollie lived a 45-minute drive away from us, and we knew they were going to get all the help they could get. So, myself and my husband Jason moved them into a purpose-built annex next to our family home. However, soon we realised that we needed to get professional support to help my grandmother when none of us were not there. Bringing in outsourced care was great, but we felt a little out of the loop. Although there was a file logging everything that happened during the day, we wanted more detail. And so, Jason gave up his job to become a full-time carer, with the…

Dawn Chambers, Glasgow Working as an administrative manager for Martin Veterinary Centre, I loved getting to spend time with all the animals there. Then, one day, a particularly poorly looking cat was brought in by Cats Protection. He was in a right state. Only a few weeks old, he was on the edge of losing his eyesight and was clearly malnourished. With just one look, I felt so sorry for him. As an administrator, I often travel to Cats Protection’s adoptive centre in Glasgow to do their paperwork. Over the next few weeks, I regularly came into contact with this cat, who I soon learned was called Cookie. Unfortunately, the vets had been unable to save his eyesight and he was now blind. The poor thing had been ripped from his mother at what they believed to be about…

mother’s love

There’s nothing quite like the bond between a mother and her baby. Whether they’re human or part of the animal kingdom, a mother’s love is undeniable. Pictures from Chester Zoo captured the adorable moment when Mandy, a 43-year-old Western Chimpanzee, cradled her newborn, moments after birth. After an eight-and-a-half-month pregnancy, the critically endangered chimpanzee gave birth in August of this year. Settling into their new life, visitors of the zoo can witness their loving bond. Andy Lenihan, Team Manager of the Primates section at Chester Zoo, said; ‘Mandy is a wonderful mum. She’s bonded instantly with her new baby and can be seen protectively cradling it in her left arm at all times. ‘It’s a little too soon to tell if her new arrival is male or female as a newborn chimpanzee will remain in…

dangerouss kiss

Brogan Thomas, 22, Darlington Sitting on her great grandad’s lap, my little girl was all smiles as he bounced her on his knee. Kaylah, then a year old, screeched with laughter as he tickled her. ‘Be gentle with him, love,’ I joked with her. ‘Grandad’s getting old!’ ‘Don’t be silly,’ my grandad Mervin, 70, smiled. It was January this year, and Grandad, my mum Karen, 47, dad Brian, 49, and a few of my friends had come over for the evening. It was a full house, and my fiancé Connor, 22, and I had cooked up a feast for everyone. Now, chatting over the dinner table, I was so happy to be spending time with my nearest and dearest. But of course, Kaylah was the centre of attention. ‘Give us a cuddle, then,’ Mum smiled, reaching for her. ‘My turn…
