‘Peter McIlvenny of specialist car insurer Carole Nash says, ‘The Dolomite is a great candidate for the best-looking Seventies BL car and has seen a solid rise in values in the last ten years. Unsurprisingly the Sprint has seen the biggest increase, with top examples now reaching five figures. Moving forward, values seem set to rise across the entire range with project cars seeing the biggest increase as more become viable propositions. Insurance-wise go for agreed-value cover. It will take away the uncertainty of what you will be paid in the event of a total loss and you will not spend hours on the internet trying to find one for sale to compare against.’ Classic car insurance quotes: 0333 005 7541 or carolenash.com…

in the trade

SIERRA COSSIE FOR £52,500 RS500 money for a regular Cosworth? Not quite. This car, recently auctioned by online saleroom The Market, was one of the ten rhd pre-production prototypes. It was also the only one painted Moonstone, is the only known survivor of the ten, and appeared in a period Ford TV ad. The car has spent much of its life in the hands of an enthusiast in New Zealand, clocking up just 68k miles, and is largely original. Probably 50% more than a regular RS Cosworth might’ve made, but actually looks quite a bargain. BONHAMS DATE CHANGE To avoid a clash with another classic car auction taking place on the same day, Bonhams has put back the date of its next MPH sale at Bicester Heritage. It will now take place a…

choose your aston martin virage

In 1988 Aston Martin replaced the Sixtiesdesigned V8 with the softly wedge-shaped Virage, powered by a 330bhp version of the venerable V8. Despite initial motoring media acclaim the model didn’t sell as well as planned. 1992 saw the Virage 6.3 option giving 500bhp. Engine changes were developed out of the AMR1 Group C racing programme. Gearbox options were five-or six speed manuals and a three-speed automatics. Numerous chassis and body tweaks were available too. All the elements were available separately to upgrade existing cars. In 1996 the Virage was replaced by the V8 Coupé which inherited its body styling from the more powerful Vantage. reynard on reynard

Indycar constructor Adrian Reynard picked the Superprix to debut his newly restored Reynard 795F and make a return to racing himself in the Formula Ford 2000 race. ‘This was the last 795F I built. I originally sold it to Tim Wallwork, although I probably raced it myself in 1979 - I didn’t keep a track of the chassis numbers back then,’ he said. ‘The restoration was completed last year. It’s taken four years in total, and it’s really the same specification I raced it in apart from the centre-post rear wing - I might try my twinpost configuration later. ‘The 795F marked the transition of Reynard from small-scale supplier to a bigger manufacturer of racing cars. The innovation was its simplicity - it used fewer parts than its contemporaries and I designed…

eight out of ten for historics

Historics celebrated its tenth anniversary with a large and successful sale at Windsorview Lakes in Berkshire. Of the 177 vehicles on offer, not far off 80% sold. It tops another strong run of UK sales as the classic market continues to perform better than it did pre-Covid. A strong percentage of sales were also above what looked like sensible estimates, helped by a varied catalogue with lots of really top cars. The pictured Lotus Elan Sprint coupé is of special note. An older Mick Miller restoration that still looked fresh, it made a whopping £44,714 against a £38k top estimate. Elsewhere the picture is less rosy, with Artcurial shifting not quite half of the 89 cars at its Monaco auction. With high-end cars currently underperforming, what happens in the US during the…
