the mood of the moment: cosying up, snuggling down

The November issue is always one of my favourites – a celebration of home comforts and the pure joy of closing the door behind you, swapping muddy boots for slippers and trying to persuade the cat to budge up in the prime spot by the fire (it never works). This year, I’m really proud to announce that Country Homes & Interiors has launched its own range of furniture in partnership with One.World. We’ve really enjoyed developing these ‘Modern Country Classics’ – good quality pieces that will form the backbone of your country interior and give you a versatile foundation for building and evolving your style year after year. Find out more on page 10… P.S. Don’t forget to buy your tickets! Tickets to Country Homes & Interiors Christmas are on sale now…

where mid-century meets country

Moving to the UK from Australia, Christen Pears and Chris Blake had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted from their new home. ‘We were specifically looking for a property with holiday cottages,’ says Christen. ‘I travelled ahead of Chris with an agreed list of nine properties to view in Cornwall and Devon. But that search stopped short after the very first viewing. This house ticked so many boxes and felt so right, I just knew it was meant to be.’ Cancelling the other viewings was a bold move, especially for a house that wasn’t the classic Georgian property Christen had thought she wanted. ‘I love that look but this house, although lacking in period features, had the cottages we wanted, space for a Pilates studio and an amazing garden,’…

on my doorstep...

Visit… ‘The spectacular stretch of coastline between Zennor and The Gurnard’s Head. Autumn is the perfect time to visit when the crowds have thinned and the weather is still warm.’ Shop at… ‘The Leach Pottery Shop (leachpottery.com), for beautiful pieces by both the studio and local makers.’ Go for a meal at… ‘The Victoria Inn (victoriainn-penzance.co.uk). An award-winning pub situated a couple of miles away in the coastal village of Perranuthnoe. It serves local, seasonal food. We like to work up an appetite by walking there along the South West Coast Path. Also Tremenheere Kitchen (tremenheere kitchen.com ) for delicious breakfasts.’…

living the dream

How do you make a mix of different furniture styles work? ‘I simply choose pieces of furniture that appeal to me. I suppose I was subconsciously following Josef Frank’s idea of Accidentism; in other words, if you mix styles and objects you like they will somehow blend harmoniously together.’ Which mid-century European finds are the best fit for an English country backdrop? ‘Rustic pieces with an emphasis on wood and leather lend themselves to a country setting.’ What about pattern and colour? ‘I’m quite cautious when it comes to pattern. When I do use it, it tends to be subtle. The exception is Josef Frank’s glorious botanical prints.’…
