What fascinates me most when we are putting together an issue of Modern Rustic is seeing the different ways that people use their homes. This is governed to a large degree, of course, by the country and climate in which they live: the houses in South Africa (page 58) and Italy (page 128) feature glass walls and outdoor areas that are furnished with just as much panache as the interiors. In African Dream on page 26, a holiday home created from an old farm building in the bush even has an outdoor shower and bathroom. For those of us used to unreliable weather, this feels delightfully indulgent and is evidence that, as well as enjoying a hot climate, these owners equally don’t have any next-door neighbours to consider. The Isle of Skye has fired the imagination of generations of artists, and its varied landscape has provided Patricia Shone with 25 years of inspiration for her rugged, textured ceramics – a collection of vessels that this year won her the prestigious Emmanuel Cooper award at Ceramic Art London. Patricia worked as a chef for more than a decade after graduating from art college. “Cooking and ceramics both involve burning things at high temperature,” she points out, “and at that time I was more competent with food than with clay.” And there’s a scorched, blackened character to most of her work, the surfaces riven by splits and furrows, so it often looks more like wood.
