There's a hint of autumn in the air, and that means only one thing in our house – a new series of Strictly Come Dancing! We're rather indulging ourselves this issue not only with Susan's American Smooth couple design on page 16, but also with an exciting behind-the-scenes interview with Strictly costume designer Vicky Gill. Turn to page 22 to keep dancing! Don't worry, it's not all quicksteps and cha-cha-chas this issue. We also captured the side of autumn that doesn't involve sequins with stunning projects like Jayne Netley Mayhew's foxes on page 8, or our unusual apple silhouettes on page 46. Cross stitch is great for marking the small occasions in life as well as the big ones. We have a lovely 'first day at school' card to wish youngsters luck…

Go to a show! It’s tempting to stay in and stitch as summer ends, but this is the perfect time to get out and about, with plenty of craft fairs to rev up your motivation! While we love the big craft shows, there are plenty of smaller events to find out about in your area. For example, at The Beehive in Honiton, East Devon, the annual craft fair takes place on Saturday 5th November, with fifty stalls offering everything from embroidery to pottery, and even children’s craft activities organised by the Creation Station throughout the fair. Find details at www.beehivehoniton.co.uk. Diane and Neil Pawson (www.dippydesignsgifts.co.uk) run regular craft fairs across Yorkshire where stitchers come to swap tips and ideas, source quality goods and watch demonstrations from like-minded stallholders. “There’s always someone to…

Tell us about yourself I’m from the South East of England but I’m currently studying Forensic Science at the University of Lincoln. I love cross stitching, candle and soap making and writing fanfictions. When did you fall in love with cross stitch? I fell in love with cross stitching when I was home for the summer after my first year of university, I had three months off and didn’t know what to do with myself so my mum suggested I get a hobby. I picked up some small cross stitch kits and I was hooked immediately. What sort of things do you most like to stitch? I love stitching flowers, I just think they are so pretty and the colours used in the projects are bright and vibrant, which makes the flowers pop. What’s been your…

autumn foxes

Meet the designer... Jayne Netley Mayhew “This sweet design of two young fox cubs snoozing in the undergrowth is an easy one to stitch, as there are no fractional stitches or backstitch used, just whole cross stitch. One thing I have always done when working with a lot of different colour threads, is to lay them out neatly, so that each time you change colour you don’t have to sort through them. Arrange them in the same colour layout as the key, this saves time when you need to change thread colour or to find the right one. If you find the colours difficult to tell apart, then use more needles. If there are five colours in that range, thread five needles, and place them into the band on the skein. You…
