In the 1950's, DRUM was a pioneer of black journalism bringing together courageous investigative journalism and cutting-edge photojournalism for Africa. But DRUM isn't just about history. South Africa has changed a lot in the last 50 years, and DRUM has kept pace with these changes. Today it is a thoroughly modern magazine in touch with its readers. jobs time bomb

IF SOUTH Africa doesn’t deal with its unemployment crisis, and quickly, we will go nowhere as a country. Continued and growing unemployment is a recipe for chaos, and among the reasons for xenophobic attacks and other crimes. There’s nothing as painful as studying for years at university with the hope of getting a job, only to find yourself sitting at home, jobless. Unemployment seems mainly to affect those who are already financially oppressed; it has very little impact on those individuals whose families are financially secure and those who are politically connected. President Cyril Ramaphosa needs a plan for the private and public sectors to create jobs. MIYELANI HLUNGWANI, MUKHOMI VILLAGE THE WINNING LETTER RECEIVES R300. Letters should be about 100 words. Endometriosis is a condition that’s being diagnosed more and more often, and it’s worth making sure you don’t have it. For some it can lead to infertility, which could be devastating if you want to become a mom. Turn to page 36 for everything you need to know about this condition and when you must seek medical help. We’d also love to hear from you if you’ve suffered from it – to share your story, email mystory@drum.co.za Until next week, THE DRUM TEAM We would love to hear your thoughts on matters close to your heart. it’s over – again!

HER list of talents are about as long as her slender arm: celebrated DJ, author, watch designer, businesswoman and entrepreneur, accomplished traveller and doting mom. Yet it seems every time DJ Zinhle trends online it has more to do with what’s happening in her love life instead of being about her considerable achievements. This was recently the case again when her former flame and father of her child was filmed locking lips with another woman in Cape Town. AKA and model Nelli Tembe are seen getting cosy in the video that went viral on social media – and it outraged Zinhle’s fans. Was he once again cheating on her as he did with Bonang Matheba, they wanted to know? Or is he just out to humiliate the woman who’s remained loyal throughout their…

the missing millions

THERE was no gunfire, no tyres screeching, no blaring of sirens and no panicked shoppers scattering across the aisles. In fact, this heist at Africa’s largest shopping mall, the Mall of Africa in Midrand, was so quiet nobody knew it was happening and the details of the stolen cash emerged only about seven months after it took place. It was an otherwise ordinary morning in July last year when Bathobile Mlangeni (29), a security guard at one of the biggest cash-in-transit companies in SA, allegedly strolled out of the mall’s basementlevel cash depot wheeling a shopping trolley filled with refuse bags stuffed with R4 million in cash. She didn’t report for work again and so far, efforts by the police, and her employer SBV Secure Solutions, to trace her have been fruitless. In fact,…
