queen of cleaning

WHAT I DO AT GH I oversee all things cleaning-related, so I’m your go-to if you want to know whether you really have to rinse dishes before loading the dishwasher (no!) or which vacuum traps dirt best (GH Seal star Miele!). As GH’s resident stain buster, I’ve rescued literally hundreds of colleagues from coffee spills and lunchtime mishaps. I also head up our Textiles Lab, where we test everything from sports bras and bedding to paper towels and luggage. Plus, I sit on a number of industry committees, to ensure that consumers’ voices are heard. WHY I LOVE MY JOB I’m always discovering new products and tips to solve home-care problems and take the chore out of cleaning — and I love sharing my finds with readers. It’s cool when a tried-and-true trick…

LAST WEEKEND I WAS REFRESHINGLY UNBOOKED. With no social, family or work obligations hanging over my head (I’d even finished the laundry and put it all away!), I indulged in a little “me” time, curling up with a stack of my favorite magazines on the front porch. What a joy to escape! I got some really great inspiration from other people’s homes, learned from other people’s experiences — and let my imagination take me away. It’s so easy to be pushed along by your schedule, allowing it to dictate where and how you spend your time. Now I’m marveling at how those few precious hours on a Sunday afternoon helped set me up for the week ahead. Not only did I come to work with a head full of fresh ideas,…

@aprilfranzino GH BEAUTY LAB Q POOL WATER TURNED MY HAIR GREEN. YIKES!—Jessica W. A: That scary green cast happens when chlorine oxidizes copper in water, binding it to strands, explains James Corbett, Clairol Color Director in New York City. (It’s more visible on light hair because the tint is masked by dark strands’ pigment.) The color will fade with repeated shampooing to remove the greening buildup, the Beauty Lab says. For a faster fix, try Corbett’s DIY, which he’s tested on salon clients: Rinse with tomato juice by pouring it over hair in the shower and letting it sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing and washing as usual. “The juice’s acid helps pull out the chlorinated water, and the red color cancels the green,” he says. MYTH OR MIRACLE? Microneedling for smooth skin THE…

Q I’VE STRUGGLED WITH FRIZZ FOREVER. WHAT CAUSES IT? — DEBBIE S. Hair damage and weather are to blame for frizz, causing strands to lose their smooth alignment. Hot tools, hair brushing and chemical treatments like haircolor can damage the outer layer of strands, a.k.a. the cuticle. It then becomes a series of layered scales that get lifted instead of lying flat. That raised cuticle allows moisture (worse in high humidity) to enter or escape from strands — causing them to swell up, creating frizz, or dry out, producing flyaways. Frizz is generally more common in curly hair, which tends to be drier. LAB LOWDOWN: To stop frizz, you need to make the cuticle lie flat by keeping hair conditioned. Apply conditioner from root to tip each time you shampoo, and smooth…
