REACTION IN THE Grazia office to the Oscar nominations was mixed. On the one hand, major excitement at the nod given to Brit Florence Pugh; a woman so talented she made me rethink my long-held prejudice against Amy March. We look at how the accolade marks a big year for Florence in Hollywood on page 22. On the other hand, the director category made for depressing reading. Only five women have been nominated for Best Director in the Oscars’ 92-year history; a statistic that Helen O’Hara argues on page 34 needs tackling. What if all women boycotted the Oscars? Without them the ceremony would be a far less interesting place……

The tabloids have unfairly targeted Meghan since the wedding. A woman with opinions, a past, a foreigner and black. The onslaught has been bordering on racism. So I applaud (and sympathise) with their decision to do what’s best for the three of them. We sometimes forget that the royals are only human. I hope the tabloids are now regretting their relentless tirade of allegations. They have driven them away. Madeleine Drurie LONELY WEIGHT LOSS I read Rebecca Reid’s Am I the only one feeling strange about ‘new’ Adele? (20 Jan) as someone who recently…

letter of the week

SUPER SINGLEDOM Like Francesca, who wrote How I learned to love being alone (20 Jan), I’m in my mid-twenties, recently single and have finally realised how much time I spent in relationships because I was scared of being alone. This time, I’m actively trying to enjoy being single and having time to myself. That is a really empowering thing and I agree with Francesca that I already feel like a more centred person. That being said, it was really comforting to read about someone going through the same thing. I hope I can have the same great, positive experiences she’s had! Sophie Evangelisti…

We don’t want James Bond’s hand-me-downs “Anyone hoping for a sassy, sophisticated lady to order a shaken-not-stirred martini and utter the words, ‘The name’s Bond, Jane Bond’ is going to be disappointed. While some have called for a woman to be next in line to play the MI6 agent, last week producers of the franchise ruled it out, with Barbara Broccoli saying, ‘James Bond can be of any colour, but he is male.’ We usually love to see women at the top in traditionally male-dominated industries, but agree on this one. Feminism isn’t about women playing men’s parts in films; Hollywood’s gender-swaps won’t solve sexism. We deserve our own thrilling stories – and our own heroes.”…

whatsapp groups: humanity’s greatest threat?

IT WON’T AMAZE you to hear I’m not a group person. I think ‘joining in’ is what happens to those who lack the imagination to go their own way. I hate being organised, managed, run, and I believe there’s a special place in hell for social scenes, for circuits , for sets – I’ve never met one I didn’t seek to destroy with some sort of controversy or breakaway faction. The current WhatsApp group situation, therefore – according to which, we are routinely dragged from our IRL lives, off into some new online mass psychodrama spawned by a group-premise as spurious as: We All Went to the Same Dinner Party Once! or: You Guys Won’t Believe What Just Happened To Me In The Co-op! or: Family! – is hitting me hard.…

1. New in FKA TWIGS AND MATT HEALY How many ways do we love the concept of these two as a possible couple? So many! Not least due to the Denise Welch factor (she’s Matt’s mum). Every situation is better with DW in it. 2. New in WOMBATS It transpires that stories they were sheltering other animals from the fallout of the Australian bush fires were wildly exaggerated. Still, they are charming. 3. Up NCUTI GATWA Break-out breathtaking superstar of Sex Education fame, back for a second series on Netflix. Says he’s ‘almost been beaten up for saying I’m Scottish’. 4. New in NAOMI NAGATA Alluring, not entirely trustworthy on The Expanse (Amazon Prime), which is old, but we’ve got this policy about avoiding new shows everyone else is gushing over. 5. Non-mover LARRY DAVID Coined the ‘half is more’ fashion theory in an…
