welcome to the issue

‘IT’S CHIC TO REPEAT!’ That’s what LA vintage store owner Cameron Silver told us this week about BAFTA organisers’ plea for their guests to help make the red carpet more sustainable, by rewearing old outfits. It’s not just A-list stars who are waking up to the idea. We’re all beginning to think more carefully about how our fashion and beauty choices impact the planet. Which is why in this week’s issue we’ve focused on brands putting their eco credentials at the heart of what they do – without sacrificing anything when it comes to style. So I hope you find something for your wardrobe or home that you can shop guilt-free. And, most importantly, love forever. @hattie_brett / feedback@graziamagazine.co.uk…

How brave to speak about such a traumatic experience. 2019 was a tough year for me, with a failed pregnancy in February that had to be medically evacuated. I then got post-natal depression, which required therapy and a sabbatical from my job. I had never thought I may be suffering from PTSD. I now understand that the loss in February had a huge impact on my mental health. Thank you for making me begin to understand I’m not alone. I’m feeling much better about 2020. letter of the week

GRIEF SO LONELY Someone said to me recently, ‘In turbulent times you’ll see who your true friends are,’ and, boy, has it become apparent. Thank you Grazia and psychologist Emma Kenny for writing so eloquently about supporting a grieving friend (Life skills, 20 Jan). My mum sadly passed away at the end of last year, in tragic circumstances, but I never thought the silence of a best friend would take over my emotions. It almost feels as if I’m grieving the loss of my friend as well as Mum, as my friend has taken a radio silence. Reading this really has helped me to put things in perspective. Leanne…

Looking after number one… A new survey by sex toy maker Tenga has revealed that we are the nation who masturbates the most in the world. Some 61% of us pleasure ourselves, with one in 10 doing so at least three times a week, according to the poll. At a time when we are hearing story after story about burnout, it’s a relief to find that we are making some time in our packed schedules for self-love. As we continue to navigate our way through an epidemic of busy, let’s keep our priorities in line by putting our wellbeing first. And, as the research also shows, the stigma around masturbation is on its way out – we Brits have finally realised how healthy it is.…

have i got good girl code? no idea! have you?

DESPITE SWEARING I wouldn’t go and see any Films With Messages In this year – anything critics describe as ‘urgent’, anything that might make me Think, Despair or Call Me To Action (had enough of all that in 2019; just entertain me, Hollywood! Show me a good time!) – I watched Bombshell last night, the dramatisation of the real-life story in which two senior Fox News anchorwomen bring down Roger Ailes, Fox’s intensely powerful CEO, on grounds of sexual harassment. Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly did this categorically not in the spirit of sisterly feminist togetherness – they didn’t really like each other, let alone the feminist movement – but rather, because Ailes and his proclivities had disrupted both of their careers. They acted not on high principle or hashtag, and…
