Emma Smales You photographed The Treehouse, the 2022 Small Home of the Year, for this issue. What stood out to you most about this project? That it is so small and humble, sitting next to the epic and majestic landscape of Mount Taranaki. It’s quirky and fun; you are literally up amongst the trees. What excites you most about your work at the moment? Exploring all the different possibilities of photographing a building and pulling together a collection. The Treehouse could be described as a tiny house, an artist’s retreat, or a unique guest house; what do you appreciate most about small spaces? It’s all yours, to be you. New Zealand design will be exhibited on the world stage when six local designers — Resident, Citta, James Dunlop Textiles, David Trubridge, Noho, and Nodi — showcase a curation of furniture, lighting, and textiles at San Francisco Design Week. The exhibition will reference inspirational elements emblematic of New Zealand’s vast natural landscape, relaying stories of our way of life, and focusing on the importance of the protection of the natural world through sustainable design. Shannon Novak’s installation Bridge Between Worlds has filtered its colours throughout Auckland’s Britomart. With Love I, which is on display in the main foyer of the PWC building, is a recreation of the various flags in the rainbow community, inclusive of circular forms that represent people and groups coming together in support of each other. With Love II is located in the HSBC Tower, and With Love IV can be found at Jarden House. In an exploration of pattern and light, ADesignStudio’s new hand-blown glass crackle wall lights introduce radiant shadows and light in expressive dappled hues. Embodying the skill and artistry of centuries-old glassblowing techniques, each piece offers an individual sculptural effect. Armed with LED technology, the lamp inside is concealed, while light radiates through. Christchurch’s architectural festival is returning for 2022 in celebration of the city’s special spaces and hidden gems. More than 40 public and private buildings will be open for the event, and there will be guided walks and a range of talks, activities, and workshops. This year’s experiences include a five-by-five metre, four-storey residence by Thom Craig, an award-winning kōhanga reo by Bull O’Sullivan Architecture, and a renovated Victorian workers cottage by RTA Studio.
