Say cheese There’s good news for full-fat fans: new research by The University of Texas has found that consuming whole dairy products, such as full-fat milk, yoghurt, cheese and butter, is unlikely to lead to an early death. Hedgerow heroes It’s not just birds that benefit from hedgerow jewels. Rosehip oil can help improve scars, stretch marks and wrinkles. Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil (£19.50, trilogyproducts.com) is pure Rosa canina (rosehip) – massage two to three drops on to the face, morning and night. ROSEHIP Rosa rubiginosa Rosehip oil is famed for its restorative powers. This is due, in part, to its high fatty acid content: namely linoleic and (more unusually) alpha-linolenic acid. Perfect for ageing skin, these lipids play an essential role in the defence and regeneration of skin cells. Rosehip oil also contains anti-ageing vitamin A in the form of trans-retinoic acid. While less potent than prescription and over-the-counter retinoids (learn more about vitamin A on page 28), there is evidence to suggest that rosehip oil can help to reduce the appearance of scarring, age and sun pigmentation, and even soften fine lines. Look out for cold-pressed varieties: this means the rosehip’s goodness hasn’t been degraded by heat during the extraction process. As vitamins go, B12 doesn’t get much airtime, which is surprising, as it plays such a significant and instrumental role in our daily health and vitality. Why do I need it? Having low levels of B12 can result in anaemia, a condition when the blood contains fewer red blood cells than normal, or less haemoglobin (used to carry oxygen around the body) than needed. When our organs don’t get what they need to perform optimally, it can lead to fatigue. Other symptoms include a sore tongue, mouth ulcers and a yellow tinge to the skin. This nutrient is also a vital ingredient in healthy nerve cells. Some of the specific symptoms associated with anaemia caused by B12 deficiency are pins and needles, difficulty walking and problems with memory. B12 has also been studied…
