skin 101

HYPERPIGMENTATION 101 Expert Dr Natasha Chapman, Laserderm Medical Aesthetic Clinics What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation, or increased pigmentation on the skin, is the dark patches that make your skin tone appear uneven. It can be superficial or in deeper layers and it’s usually caused by sun damage, hormonal changes or skin ageing. In addition to staying out of the sun, using SPF products and following a good skin-care routine, what can you do? Treatment of hyperpigmentation involves a multi-level approach and differs according to the level in the skin where the pigmentation lies. There are so many good products now available that help to combat the issue, from supplements that prevent further pigmentation from forming to creams and serums containing antioxidants, retinol and lightening agents. The first step in treating pigmentation problems is to have an…

behind the lens

GET TICKETS! The fourth annual Jozi Film Festival will be taking place from 20 to 22 February at several venues throughout the city. Jozifilmfestival.co.za How did your career in film-making begin? A high-school friend introduced me to the glories from the Golden Age of classic cinema but it was wanting to follow a career that would let me do, see and learn anything that really sparked my interest. I realised that making films is one of the most powerful mediums for communicating mankind’s most important invention, storytelling. Are there any particular challenges you face as a female film-maker? I’ve faced challenges, and it’s possible that some of them have been due to being female without my realising it, but I feel I’ve had more privileges than obstacles. Since my film Love The One You Love first…

48 hours in bangkok

PAUSE HERE, STOP THERE • Golden Mount (Wat Saket) is listed as a top tourist attraction but rarely receives the hordes of visitors that other temples do. Arrive early, take a slow walk up the 318 steps to the gold stupa, and enjoy 360° views of Bangkok. • Silk magnate Jim Thompson helped to revitalise the industry in Asia. His traditional Thai home is now a museum (Jimthompsonhouse.com) that’s absolutely worth a visit. The shop is a good place to buy quality (but pricey) silk products. • Lumpini Park is a 57-hectare green space surrounded by Bangkok’s office towers. Pack a bottle of something ice cold, hire a giant swan pedalo (seriously) and toast the sunset from the small lake. Yoga classes are held each day at 7am and 6pm; take your own…

take a hike

Wild out on 27 February, photographer Ian Tuttle captures the real hikers along the movie’s gruelling 4 286km Pacific Crest Trail MC: What drew you to shooting the series? The magnitude of these hikers’ journeys, and the chance to participate in it in my own small way. When I’ve gone backpacking I’m always amazed by how simple life becomes: sleep, eat, make forward progress, acknowledge beauty (and pain, too). I wanted to meet people who were experiencing that on a grand scale and I wanted to commemorate it. MC: What was the most interesting thing you discovered while shooting the story? Over and over again I heard from hikers that the physical hardship isn’t so difficult. It’s the psychological difficulty that is the real stressor. It’s wondering if you can make it through the…

overcoming the stigma

IT’S NOT OFTEN that I share my heart in the public space, mainly because doing so opens me up to public scrutiny from those who feel entitled to a piece of you. However, over the last few months I’ve found myself in a lonely space where I was feeling a lot of sadness and a hopelessness that saw me having a session with a psychologist. While sitting in his armchair, I stared at the box of tissues beside me, suddenly bemused by those movie scenes where the patient gets to a point where they break down. I wondered how long it would take before I reached for the tissues. It took about half an hour. It was a combination of having to face the things in my life that were…
