what we love about july

1. STARS AND STRIPES On July 4, we celebrate certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—whether it’s watching fireworks or scrolling through Taylor Swift’s Instagram. 2. OH, MY LORDE Good news for your headphones: Lorde’s soulful voice is back. The 20-year-old Grammy Award winner’s sophomore album, Melodrama, is currently playing on repeat on our Spotify account. 3. PRETTY IN PINK ’Tis the season to rosé all day, accessories included. Pick up a blush- or fuchsia-hued bag—or go all out with one in both shades like this latest Chanel design, inspired by the Ritz in Paris. (Price upon request; 800-550-0005) 4. BOTTLE ROCKET Bring some party vibes to your bathroom vanity with Poppy Delevingne’s Poptastic collection for Jo Malone. chrissy teigen

AGE: 31. HOMETOWN: Delta, Utah. CURRENT RESIDENCE: Los Angeles. FREE STYLE: The model arrived wearing a Dries Van Noten linen button-up top, light-denim cutoff shorts, and Gianvito Rossi black suede thigh-high boots. GO FISH: Teigen’s husband, John Legend; mom; and daughter, Luna, came for lunch, toting a whole sea bass that her mom had prepared earlier in the day. “I eat a fish a day. I’m obsessed!” said Teigen. LOUNGE ACT: Between shots, she hung out in a floral silk Gucci robe she brought from home. BEAUTY ROUTINE: Hairstylist Teddy Charles complemented the textured clothing on set by giving Teigen an easy summertime updo: After blowdrying, he tousled her strands with salt spray before creating a messy side part and bobby-pinning the hair above the neck. To let Teigen’s natural beauty…

I come from a long line of “seekers.” My greatgrandmother practiced something called Theosophy. (Google it. Harry Houdini was a fan.) My grandmother was a vegetarian who found Buddhism in the 1960s, went on meditation retreats, and consulted with a woman who practiced “automatic writing,” which involved sitting silently while transcribing some sort of magically divined voices of wisdom. My mother, always one to enjoy a good horoscope at the hair salon, once took me to a daylong “Enneagram” workshop to learn an (allegedly) ancient Egyptian system for decoding personality type. So when Senior Editor Jen Ortiz suggested that, in light of the anxiety following the 2016 presidential election, we should do a “Wellness Issue” to share with readers how to feel better, inside and out, I jumped. Not only can…

ANIMAL PLANET The women who are protecting the rhinos [“On the Prowl”] have a very dangerous job; they are putting their lives at risk, not knowing what they will come across at any given time. This is the epitome of bravery! We all can do something for animal welfare: Whether it’s big, like what the women are doing in South Africa, or small, like volunteering at an animal shelter, something is better than nothing. —Kristy McMahan, Phenix City, AL TAKE THE LEAP Your piece “Rebels With a Cause” is fantastic. I felt a certain kind of empowerment after reading these three women’s stories. The fact [that] each of them left the security of a lucrative career and stepped out on faith gave me chills. I felt proud of these women for their ability to…
