Waking up to a new Satafrikaaaa They teach us from a very early age in the media game that you never discuss politics, but the way things are looking at the moment that hardly seems possible. As I am typing this we just got word that the ANC will push for a vote of no confidence in Numero Uno and that they want CR17 to be sworn in tomorrow – all in the same day. I can’t help but feel excited by that, hence breaking the “no politics rule” as this is good news for all of us. This could mean that we wake up to a new president and quite possibly a whole new South Africa on Friday. We can finally actually be that success story we’ve always wanted to…

RECOVER Recovergen Informed sport certified. Alpha-lipoic acid. 4:1 carb: protein ratio. Whey protein hydrolysate. High in BCAAs. The 30-45 minute window period after strenuous training or events is a crucial time during which the body aims to recover as quickly as possible. The body’s natural instinct to immediately replace muscle glycogen (our first and main source of energy) means that it will use whatever nutrients are available, and will break down muscle tissue for this energy, resulting in muscle wastage. Biogen Recovergen supplies a carefully formulated combination of ingredients that will help mend and build muscles, whilst regenerating energy stores as fast as possible. This upgraded formulation provides the scientifically recommended 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein, through fast-acting sources such as maltodextrin and hydrolysed whey protein. Biogen Recovergen is also high in…

Cutting-edge news from the frontiers of science On the fence about joining a gym or going it alone? Sign on the dotted line. In a new study from Iowa State University, USA, 75% of subjects who were gym members met the US guidelines for physical activity (at least 75 minutes of vigorous or 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week) compared with just 18% of non-members. Gym rats also had lower odds of being obese, a smaller waist (about 5cm less for men), a lower resting heart rate, and better heart health.…

rest your muscles!

1 Do you use your bed for sleeping (not TV, reading, or sex) 85% of the time? 2 Do you fall asleep in 30 minutes or less? 3 Do you sleep through the night or wake up no more than once? 4 If you wake up during the night, do you go back to sleep in no more than 20 minutes? FOR A CRAPPY WORKOUT, CALL… Want to put yourself through a half-assed sweat session that’s less intense and could break your neck? No? Then stay off the damn phone. In a study at Ohio’s Hiram College, USA, two groups of students worked out phoneless or while texting, talking, or listening to music on a phone. Result: Texting and phone-chatting (though not rocking out to tunes) made focusing on a workout harder — eg, non-phoners spent seven…
