welcome

“To all kindred spirits for whom the crash of buffers and the snatch of three-link couplings is music to the ears”. As far as dedications go, this has to be one of my favourites. It appears at the beginning of Essery, Rowland and Steel’s seminal text, British Goods Wagons (David & Charles, 1970) and perfectly sums up the attraction of freight trains, regardless of era. There might not be as much shunting today, compared to the days of steam, but the clank of buffers as a freight train stops and starts is still music to my ears. While this is devastating for many people, during the first lockdown the modelling industry reported a large increase in sales as many of us embarked on new layouts. We’re sure nobody wants to be in this situation, but it does present us with plenty of opportunities for modelling. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small, and that’s demonstrated in this month’s Big Picture ‘Lynsford’ which proves that a great layout doesn’t necessarily have to be a room-filler. Look out for ‘Lynsford’ in a future issue of Model Rail.…

hornby 2021 range revealed

Rounding off a strange and eventful year, Hornby’s annual presentation to the model press was delivered live online, with the Model Rail team attending from the comfort of our own homes. Nevertheless, there were a number of surprises, including a range of generic four and six-wheel steam-era coaches, a cute little Ruston & Hornsby ‘88DS’ 4wDM shunter, a ‘high-spec’ BR ‘9F’ and a newly tooled rendition of the LNER ‘P2’ 2-8-2, including a streamlined version and the new-build No. 2007 Prince of Wales. After nearly a decade, Hornby’s BR ‘Clan’ 4-6-2 gets a long-awaited new production run and the LNER ‘A1/3’ ‘Pacifics’ have been tweaked to improve their performance and appearance. There are some interesting contemporary liveries being applied to existing locomotive and coaching stock tooling, such as the Avanti Pendolino,…
