It goes without saying that all awards are nonsense, except for the ones you win. I am therefore very pleased to let you know that New Scientist took home the UK’s premier magazine gong at last month’s Professional Publishers Association (PPA) awards. We won the top prize, Consumer Magazine Brand of the Year, against the likes of Vogue and the Radio Times. The PPA said: “The judges were blown away by this incredible story: a hugely successful rejuvenation of an already great brand, powered by excellent editorial for a demanding audience.” Coming as it does after a testing few months, this was a hugely gratifying win. I am especially delighted that this award recognises the fantastic efforts of everyone in the New Scientist team, whether in editorial, events, design, marketing, sales or…

INEXPLICABLY regular rings of radio waves have been found in space. The discovery of “Odd Radio Circles” (see page 14) has all those ingredients of mystery, intrigue and wonder that make a classic cosmic yarn, speculation of alien involvement included. But there is much more to this than just a cute story. Odd Radio Circles are a thrilling reminder of how much more there is left to discover out there – and of how much there is to look forward to. The find came as part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe pilot survey, the first stage of a project that aims to increase the number of radio sources we know of in the sky from the current 2.5 million to more than 70 million.
