One’s just off to the polo! Shunning a chauffeured ride, Prince Philip chose to drive his wife, the Queen, to the prestigious Cartier Queen’s Cup Polo final last week. Looking comfortable behind the wheel of his Land Rover, it came as a surprise when the 96-year-old was admitted to hospital just days later with an infection. The Queen (91) looked lovely in a pink floral frock, and despite 30-plus degree heat, donned her usual white gloves to present the cup. While our Wellington-based news editor Julie Jacobson was out speaking to those involved and impacted by the upcoming aged-care workers pay reform – as well as key players in our ongoing conversations around equal pay laws – in our Auckland offices this week, we came across a 1948 editorial by Hedda Dyson that – rather discouragingly – wouldn’t look out of place amidst today’s conversations. Julie’s report, as well as Hedda’s take on the issue, begins on page 20 and I do hope you enjoy reading through it (despite the obvious frustrations). I shudder to think what Hedda – a fierce feminist–would make of the fact these conversations still need to take place today . By all accounts, Hedda sounds to have been a complete powerhouse.
