NZ Performance Car No 287 December 2020 - January 2021

Since 1996 New Zealand Performance Car has been the voice of the country’s modified import car scene. It was there to see the first import 10-second quarter mile run, there when the first official drift battle ensued, there when the first show trophies were handed out, and there to bring NZ its very first Super Lap time attack event. Each month the very best of NZ’s modified import car scene is served up. It’s New Zealand’s number 1 selling monthly motoring magazine and is New Zealand’s import performance authority and for good reason…it leaves the others for dust.

hello, my name is rene vermeer

Life is an interesting one; one minute you’re spinning spanners — or in my case, wiring houses — and the next minute you are working for NZ Performance Car. That was me a few years ago, when I first got the call to be the assistant editor of the magazine — the day after I qualified as an electrician. Life has been a wild ride ever since, from living overseas to report on car culture wherever I could fly to, to building a career in the automotive performance-parts industry. However, when the big chief Marcus Gibson phoned to ask me to take over the NZPC throne, it was not a phone call I was expecting but one I was very honoured to receive. After giving it around three seconds thought,…

honda civic type r gets a revamp!

Damn straight you better believe the team at Honda is back with another race-bred banger. Honda is back with the performance Type R Civic and it’s packing some new exciting features inside an exterior similar to last year’s model. The 2021 Honda Civic Type R is the culmination of several years of FK8-based track use, street use, and hardcore competition use and features some exciting new upgrades that will see the car outperform its predecessor in both reliability and performance. The new and updated grille features a 13 per cent larger opening to improve on circuit-based cooling efficiency — heat soaking on previous models when modified and pushed hard is a known issue. The Adaptive Damper System (ADS) is much quicker, and is able to read road conditions 10 times faster than…

nz performance car night speed drag wars

NZ Performance Car is proud to announce that it has naming-rights sponsorship of the famed Night Speed Drag Wars (NSDW)! Drag racing in New Zealand has been surging into life recently, with plenty of big-power toys in the build that are too wild for the street. Being that it’s such an accessible horsepower haven, we’re excited to be involved in the action. On behalf of the NSDW team, we can advise there will be spot prizes at each event and the introduction of our new quarter-mile decals — to replace the kW stickers. These will be available at a future NSDW event. “We’re excited to have the NZPC team involved with the event,” says Gary Bogaart, manager of Meremere Dragway. “There are plenty of fast imports around Auckland taking part these days,…

lvvta makes big changes to cert plates

That’s right, team, we’re in The Matrix now. The world has gone completely bonkers, and now your beloved cert plates are going digital. After 28 years of success using the famed fourrivet certification plate, the Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association (LVVTA) is in the process of switching over to a small digital ‘radio frequency identification’ (RFID) tag, the size of the old classic 50 cent piece. The RFID chip works in the same way as Paywave or a building access key fob. With the right scan tool, the LVVTA, police, or WOF outlet will be able to scan your cert chip, gaining in-depth access to the certification documentation carried out on the vehicle at the time of cert. The operator will be able to see the car in the state in…
