life in the old dog

I’ll be honest and say if Tana wasn’t here I wouldn’t have come back.’ TANERAU LATIMER Amongst all the preseason Super Rugby wheeling and dealing, the Blues’ acquisition of Tanerau Latimer stood out as one of the best pieces of business. Latimer is a been-there-done-that sort of player having won five test caps, two Super Rugby titles and a Commonwealth Games gold medal. He’s tough, robust, works like a dog for his team and is one of life’s good guys. In fact, he is Keven Mealamu nice. When he left the Chiefs after the 2014 season, it felt like it was too soon and yet it was understandable why he was heading for Japan. He’d first played for the Crusaders as a 19-year-old and then had eight seasons with the Chiefs. He’d smashed…

MAORI ALL BLACK, HIGHLANDER AND HAWKES BAY PROP BRENDON EDMONDS CALLS HIMSELF THE ‘APPRENTICE’ WITH HIGHLANDERS AND MAORI ALL BLACKS TEAM MATE, PROP JOSH HOHNECK THE ‘MASTER’ WHEN IT COMES TO HUNTING. Triple Super Rugby title winner Josh Hohneck who plays his provincial rugby for Waikato, introduced Brendon (known as ‘Doogie‘) to hunting last year and it has become almost a weekly ritual for the two front rowers. The boys were in one of their local spots in Dunedin (called spot x as they don’t want to reveal the location) a day after returning from South Africa last year. They went for a ‘cruisy hunt’ opting to leave at 11am in the morning, preferring the sleep-in over an early departure. Josh and Brendon shared a four wheeler, which did struggle a bit under…

editor’s letter

NOT EVERYONE is going to agree with our assessment of Sonny Bill Williams as the greatest cross code athlete of all time. For a start, too many people simply don’t like Williams and allow their ill-feeling for him as a person to affect their judgement of him as a player. They can’t or won’t see what he’s achieved in four codes – yes four, because let’s be honest, Sevens is so different from rugby it can’t really be considered the same game. There’s a hidden truth that to admire and respect an athlete, you have to like them. And when it comes down to it, plenty of people still don’t like Williams and probably never will. His crime was to walk out on the Bulldogs all those years ago and despite the fact hundreds,…

the life and times of sbw

2008 JULY Infamously walks out on the Bulldogs half a season into a one-year deal. He sneaked out the country two days before a critical game with no explanation. He washed up in France where he signed with Toulon. AUGUST A prolonged and nasty legal battle between Williams and the Bulldogs fi nally comes to a conclusion with the former having to pay the latter AUS$750,000 for breaking his contract. Williams was also hit with a fi ve-year ban from the NRL. 2009 MAY Won his fi rst professional bout as a boxer – defeating Garry Gurr with a technical knock-out. A week later he played for the Barbarians in Australia – shortly after he had been voted the most hated man in that particular country. NOVEMBER Is visited by All Black assistant coach Wayne Smith in Toulon.…

the second coming

‘Tough is a good word to describe Harris, both mentally and physically. He kept honing his craft as a senior player, absorbing the brutal nuances of frontrow life until Bay of Plenty and Chiefs representative selectors came knocking.’ There’s nothing like a little revisionist history. Let your mind wander back 18 months when the naysayers were howling that the All Blacks would be ruthlessly exposed at hooker during the World Cup. We were, supposedly, bereft of men blessed with the required internal fortitude to hold their own in the middle of the frontrow against the gargantuan and merciless English, French, Puma and Springbok packs. Test veteran Andrew Hore had traded in his footy boots for the hand tool and returned to his beloved Maniotioto homestead while the once unbreakable Keven Mealamu was spending…
