NZV8

No 173 October 2019

NZV8 Magazine was conceived when the passionate muscle car scene was in need of an authority. Thanks to a large population of baby boomers, muscle car and V8 culture is booming in New Zealand. NZV8 is not only riding that wave, but leading the way by providing a world class magazine that features the cars, events, like the annual Beach Hop and people that make the scene so exciting. NZV8 covers an extensive range of high-performance V8-engined vehicles. Wherever the local ground shakes to the beat of a tuned eight-cylinder machine, from a drag race meeting to a car show, NZV8 is there and bringing you all the action.

vote sensible

While I may share my personal opinions on this page on occasion … OK, quite often … I’m not normally one to delve into politics or political grandstanding, but I’m going to make an exception this month. I’m sure many of you, much like myself, have been guilty of complaining about things going on within local government. While I’ve never got off my high horse to do anything about it, one NZV8 contributor has. That’s right, Craig ‘Sooty’ Lord has put his name in the right standing for Mayor of Auckland, and not just because he’d like for everyone to refer to him as ‘Your Worship’. Being voted in won’t be a small task, and, while at first, I must admit, I was sceptical about his chances, the more I…

CHECK THEMOTORHOOD.COM FOR REGULAR NEWS UPDATES 2019 MUSTANG GETS THE GULF TREATMENT In what is perhaps the most iconic race car livery of all time, Brown Lee Performance has launched an official 2019 Gulf Oil Heritage Edition Mustang! Drawing on the history books that tell the story of the Ford GT40 hitting the track in 1966 and securing four consecutive victories for the Blue Oval, this special-edition modern-day Mustang pays homage to the 1967 teaming of Ford with lubricant giant Gulf that generated that instantly recognizable mix of light blue and orange on steel panels. The colours have stood the test of time, with an ever-growing army of passionate Gulf fans. And, more than half a century later, the Gulf Oil paint scheme that was worn by both the 1968-and 1969-winning Ford GT40…

TORQUEBACK, NZV8 MAGAZINE, PO BOX 46,020, HERNE BAY, AUCKLAND 1147; EMAIL TORQUEBACK@V8.CO.NZ Marcus Madill (known as ‘Wheels’) was born with spinal muscular atrophy (a form of muscular dystrophy) and has used a power wheelchair since the age of six. However, this did not slow Marcus down while enjoying farming life as a young child, and as an adult, he made the city his home for his working career and motorsporting interests. Unfortunately, the last 10 years have taken a toll on our friend Marcus in both his physical and mental well being. In 2011 on a cold Sunday morning Marcus was preparing himself to attend his four-wheel-driving club anniversary outing (Marcus rides co-driver in his specially modified 4x4 with a driver). He went to say goodbye to his dog and his power wheelchair…

EMAIL YOUR NEWS TO: EDITOR@V8.CO.NZ MARINELAND HOT ROD AND CLASSIC CAR FESTIVAL NO MORE We’ve received word that the Marineland Street Rod and Kustom Klub has regretfully confirmed that the long-running and popular Hot Rod and Classic Car Festival, which typically takes place in May, will no longer go ahead in 2020. The club has explained that health-and-safety constraints that come into place when the public is involved, and the increasing attendance at the event, which has caused issues with traffic and congestion, mean that the show isn’t viable in its current format. While an unfortunate loss to the event calendar, it is good news that the NZHRA rod run that takes place on the Friday night and Saturday prior is still going ahead between 1 and 3 May. Entries will be limited,…

ben and jaime winter 1960 oldsmobile dynamic 88

IF YOU HAVE A COOL DAILY-DRIVER AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT APPEAR IN DAILY GRIND, EMAIL EDITOR@V8.CO.NZ Awesome-looking car, guys, but we hear you’ve had other American cars? Yeah, we’ve had several trucks over the years, including a ’78 Chev dually single-cab, which had a 454 big block in it. We also had a ’60s GMC double-cab pickup, but they aren’t really suitable as a family vehicle. Not a great deal of room inside! What attracted you to the Olds? Well, the family was getting bigger, so we really needed a practical ride with a good-sized back seat. It’s a bit of a compromise, really as I [Ben] wanted a muscle car and settled on this, which really is a good family car. It’s running the original 371 Oldsmobile V8 and three-speed column-shift…
