NZV8 No 172 September 2019

NZV8 Magazine was conceived when the passionate muscle car scene was in need of an authority. Thanks to a large population of baby boomers, muscle car and V8 culture is booming in New Zealand. NZV8 is not only riding that wave, but leading the way by providing a world class magazine that features the cars, events, like the annual Beach Hop and people that make the scene so exciting. NZV8 covers an extensive range of high-performance V8-engined vehicles. Wherever the local ground shakes to the beat of a tuned eight-cylinder machine, from a drag race meeting to a car show, NZV8 is there and bringing you all the action.

we should celebrate success

We were lucky enough to catch up with one of the most well-known names in the modified car world this month. Chip Foose really needs no introduction. But, as you’ll see in our interview elsewhere in this issue, despite how well known he is and the various accolades that he’s received, he’s pretty much just a down-to-earth car guy like most others. I was fortunate enough to figure this out a few years back when we were catching the same flight out of Las Vegas after the SEMA Show and we sat chatting in the departure lounge. If I didn’t recognize his face, all I would have known was that he’d built a couple of cars, such is his modesty. Due to population alone, the difference between the New Zealand modified…

CHECK THEMOTORHOOD.COM FOR REGULAR NEWS UPDATES RIGHT-HOOK C8 CORVETTE CONFIRMED FOR NZ If you thought the announcement that the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be sold locally was a big deal, hold onto your pants; we’ve received word from Holden itself — the local arm of GM — that the newly unveiled Chevrolet Corvette C8 will be sold new on the New Zealand market, and, for the first time ever, it’ll be right-hand drive! The hype around the next generation ’Vette has been wild, with consumers and media alike fizzing over the possibilities of an all-new layout. What was unveiled, the C8, represents perhaps the most out-the-gate shift from the ’Vettes that came before it that we’ve ever seen, with the power plant mid-mounted and a cab-forward design. “Like anyone with a hint of…

EMAIL YOUR NEWS TO: EDITOR@V8.CO.NZ NAMING RIGHTS CHOSEN Southside Streeters Hot Rod Club, based in Howick, Auckland, recently ran a fundraiser, with a percentage of funds raised going to support St John Ambulance. More than 120 club members and associated sponsors attended the event, which featured club cars on show, an American-style BBQ, and, most important, the draw for the naming rights for the club’s upcoming car show, Hot Rods in Howick. Among the gathering of well-known industry suppliers and influencers hoping to win the draw, it was event host Ditron Precision Engineering that was lucky enough to take out the coveted spot. The director of Ditron, Llew Picton, stated: ’”All round a great event and people who all pulled together for a fantastic night!”’ Ditron Precision Engineering Hot Rods in Howick will take…

IF YOU HAVE A COOL DAILY-DRIVER AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT APPEAR IN DAILY GRIND, EMAIL EDITOR@V8.CO.NZ Hilux engines are meant to be as tough as they come, so why did you ditch the diesel and throw an LS at yours? I’ve actually had V8 Hiluxes for about 15 years. Originally, I had an old-school lifted 4WD Hilux with a 302 Windsor in it. It was a pretty cool truck for bashing around, but you almost needed a step ladder to get in, and [it] was really more suited to the bush than a daily-driver. After a few years, I upgraded to a slightly newer two-door one that had already had a 1UZ conversion. This one was much more reliable and was great fun to drive. I kept this for about…

EMAIL YOUR BUILDS TO EDITOR@V8.CO.NZ WE KNOW THERE ARE SOME FANTASTIC CARS BEING BUILT OUT THERE, SO DON’T BE SHY — FLICK US AN EMAIL WITH A BIT OF A BLURB AND A FEW HIGH-RESOLUTION PICS OF WHAT YOU’RE UP TO. ONE PROJECT EACH MONTH WILL WIN A $100 VOUCHER FROM RARE SPARES! The team from Pro Touring Garage in East Tamaki, Auckland, have a great sense of style, as seen in Llew Picton’s awesome Camaro ‘NASTY9’, which we featured back in Issue No. 163. The theory behind this 1967 Eleanor Mustang build wasn’t to have something quite as mint, but something that seemed to have been blown out already. What was purchased as a complete and road-going car has now been stripped right back to the shell for a ground-up build, with…
