Nadia Khan nadia.khan@inl.co.za ANTI-APARTHEID Struggle activist Maniben Sita has been remembered for her contribution to the fight for freedom. Sita, 94, who lived at a retirement home in Laudium, Pretoria, died of Covid-19 complications in hospital last Wednesday. Fakir Hassen, a veteran journalist and author, said Sita devoted her life to fighting apartheid. He said Sita was born into a family that was active in political resistance in both her father’s native India and then in South Africa. “She was inspired by her father, Nana Sita, who, in turn, was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. unrest in kzn disrupts vaccinations

Latoya Newman latoya.newman@inl.co.za RIOTING and unrest are disrupting government’s Covid-19 vaccination management strategies. In a statement on Monday, the eThekwini Municipality said its healthcare facilities (clinics) and community vaccination sites, were closed due to ongoing civil unrest across the city. “The municipality has closed its clinics due to threats that have been directed at health facilities in the city. The ongoing civil unrest has also affected community vaccination sites, which have been unable to operate. The municipality will reassess the situation … and advise the public accordingly,” said the statement. Residents who qualify for phase 2 of the vaccination rollout, which includes those aged 50 and above, are urged to continue to register to receive the vaccine. riots, covid hit rand

Ambar Warrick SOUTH Africa's rand tumbled on Monday as violence broke out after the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma, while most emerging market stocks and currencies appeared to have stabilised after losses last week. The rand sank more than 1% to a low of 14.3658 to the dollar, leading losses across emerging market currencies. Violence over Zuma's 15-month prison term spread to Johannesburg at the weekend, resulting in property damage and road closures. FORMER KwaZulu-Natal premier Dr Ben Ngubane, has died after contracting Covid-19.
